Chapter 10 - The Final Audit

It took the jury less than thirty-five minutes to reach a unanimous verdict.

As the foreperson stood up in the tense, silent courtroom and read the formal charges—Guilty of first-degree aggravated assault resulting in the termination of a pregnancy. Guilty of domestic battery. Guilty of reckless endangerment and witness intimidation—Daniel Vance buried his face in his hands and began to quietly weep.

Judge Henderson didn't mince words during sentencing.

“Mr. Vance, you abused your position of trust, you preyed upon the woman who provided your livelihood, and when exposed, you committed an act of unspeakable violence that robbed two innocent children of their lives,” Judge Henderson declared, her voice ringing with judicial thunder. “I sentence you to twenty-eight years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first fifteen years. May God have mercy on your soul.”

The gavel slammed down with the finality of a guillotine blade. Daniel was immediately handcuffed by court bailiffs and led away through the side door, his expensive suit wrinkled, his future completely obliterated.

Three months later, Emily stood on the balcony of her newly renovated penthouse apartment downtown, sipping a cup of black coffee as the morning sun illuminated the city skyline.

Her phone chimed on the patio table. It was an email from the corporate compliance board confirming the complete restructuring of Apex Global’s risk management division, with her name permanently engraved at the top as Executive Vice President of Global Integrity and Compliance.

She looked down at her wrist, tracing the faint, fading scar from the hospital IV line. The grief for her twins would always remain a quiet part of her story, but it was no longer a wound—it was a monument to her resilience.

Daniel had thought fear would keep her silent. He had thought his lies would protect him. But he had fundamentally misunderstood the woman he tried to destroy.

People lied.

Records didn't.

And Emily Vance was the one who wrote the rules now.
