Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Debt

While Daniel awaited trial in county jail, the civil litigation team Marcus Vance had assembled moved swiftly to dismantle every remaining vestige of the Vance financial empire. Because Daniel and Margaret had commingled embezzled corporate funds with personal assets, the courts granted emergency asset-seizure orders across all joint accounts, investment portfolios, and real estate holdings.

Margaret Vance found herself legally evicted from the luxury condominium Daniel had purchased for her in an upscale downtown high-rise—a property Emily’s salary and compliance bonuses had actually funded.

Standing on the sidewalk with two cheap plastic garbage bags containing her designer clothes and silver trinkets, Margaret spotted Emily stepping out of a sleek black sedan across the street. Emily was wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, sunglasses framing her face, holding a leather briefcase.

Margaret shrieked, dropping her bags and charging across four lanes of traffic, forcing a delivery truck to slam on its brakes with a screech of tires.

“You arrogant, heartless witch!” Margaret screamed, lunging at Emily before two private security guards hired by Marcus intercepted her, pinning her arms behind her back. “You took everything! You threw my son in a cage and now you’re throwing an old woman out on the street with nothing!”

Emily stopped, slowly removing her sunglasses. She looked at Margaret not with anger, but with the cold, clinical pity one might reserve for a stray animal suffering from a terminal disease.

“You didn't have nothing, Margaret. You had sixty-four thousand dollars of embezzled corporate money that you spent on slot machines and high-stakes poker nights while living in luxury off my labor,” Emily said clearly, her voice cutting through the noisy street traffic. “And now, the federal receivers are auditing every single asset you own to satisfy civil restitution judgments.”

“You’ll pay for this!” Margaret spat, struggling uselessly against the guards. “Daniel will get out! He’ll destroy you!”

“Daniel isn't getting out, Margaret. And even if he miraculously did, he has no money, no career, no reputation, and no wife,” Emily replied, putting her sunglasses back on. “If I were you, I’d catch a bus out of state before the grand jury indicts you as an accessory to corporate embezzlement and wire fraud.”

Without waiting for a reply, Emily turned, climbed back into her car, and instructed the driver to take her back to corporate headquarters. Margaret was left screaming curses at the exhaust pipes as the vehicle melted into the city traffic.
