Chapter 7 - Vanessa’s True Colors

Before Mark and Lucas could reach the heavy double doors of Clara’s ICU recovery room, a familiar, irritating click of designer heels echoed down the sterile hallway.

Vanessa stepped out from around the corner, her expression an odd mixture of manufactured concern and aggressive self-preservation. She had returned not out of love, but out of fear—fear that Mark would legally cut her out, fear that her alimony or financial safety net would vanish in the fallout of this catastrophe.

"Mark! Lucas, thank God," Vanessa gushed, rushing forward with her arms outstretched, her face locked into a practiced mask of maternal distress. "I've been beside myself for three days! That woman caused absolute chaos, didn't she? I mean, faking medical records, staging a dramatic collapse just to ruin our holiday—we need to talk about filing a restraining order, or getting her institutionalized before she—"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Mark said.

His voice wasn't loud. It wasn't even angry. It was flat, hollow, and absolute, carrying the crushing weight of a man who had looked into the abyss of his own moral bankruptcy and found it repulsive.

Vanessa blinked, her arms dropping awkwardly to her sides. "Excuse me? Mark, are you out of your mind? You're letting that woman manipulate you! She's not even Lucas's real mother—I am!"

"You aren't a mother," Lucas spoke up.

His voice was dead, devoid of any teenage petulance, sounding like the voice of an old man trapped in a boy's body. He stepped forward, standing between Vanessa and the ICU doors, looking at the woman who had given birth to him with absolute, freezing disgust.

"When my kidneys failed, you packed your bags for Aspen and ran away," Lucas said, his eyes boring straight into Vanessa's soul. "You refused to get tested. You left me to die in a hospital bed while you went skiing."

"That... that's a lie!" Vanessa stammered, her face flushing a furious, ugly crimson as heads turned in the hallway. "The doctors said the donor was an anonymous stranger from Switzerland! I didn't know—"

"The donor wasn't a stranger," Mark interrupted, stepping up beside his son, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket—a certified copy of the transplant ethics disclosure. "It was Clara. She signed the papers in the room right next to yours while you were checking into your resort. She gave you her kidney, Vanessa. And you spent five years calling her a maid while she slowly died from the complications."

Vanessa stared at the document, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Realizing the game was up, her mask of grace instantly shattered, revealing the desperate, vicious narcissist underneath.

"Fine!" Vanessa hissed, her voice turning sharp and venomous as she sneered at them both. "So she's a saint! So what? You're both pathetic! You deserve each other in that miserable house! Don't come crying to me when her medical bills bankrupt you!"

Without waiting for another word, Vanessa turned on her heel and stormed down the hospital corridor, her designer heels clicking a frantic rhythm against the floor until she disappeared around the corner forever. Neither Mark nor Lucas watched her go. Their eyes remained fixed on the double doors of the ICU.
