Chapter 5 - The Arrival of Vanessa

Before Mark could lunge forward again, before Lucas could fully comprehend the monstrous reality of what he had done, the heavy stillness of the winter night outside was shattered by the sharp crunch of tires grinding over the gravel driveway.
Through the tall, frosted front windows of the house, brilliant, piercing high beams swept across the dark glass, casting blinding geometric patterns across the dining room walls. The muffled, heavy thud of a luxury rideshare door slamming shut echoed clearly through the quiet neighborhood, immediately followed by the distinct, rhythmic, arrogant click of designer stilettos striking the concrete steps of the front porch.
Vanessa was here.
Her flight from Aspen hadn't just arrived early; it had brought her straight to the climax of a tragedy she had orchestrated years ago when she walked out the door.
Neither Mark nor Lucas moved toward the entryway. They remained frozen in their nightmares—Mark kneeling in a pool of blood, weeping uncontrollably, and Lucas staring down at his hands as if they were coated in poison.
The heavy mahogany front door swung inward with a smooth, expensive click, welcoming a sharp gust of freezing winter air that swirled through the hallway. Vanessa posed gracefully in the open entryway, draped from head to toe in a pristine, floor-length white cashmere coat that cost more than most people's monthly rent. In one hand, she held an expensive, imported bottle of vintage champagne by the neck, flashing a blinding, triumphant, socialite smile that could cut glass.
"Merry Christmas, boys!" Vanessa sang out, her voice dripping with artificial, theatrical warmth as she stepped lightly onto the foyer floorboards. "I hope you saved the head of the table for—"
Her voice died instantly in her throat. The rehearsed smile froze on her lips, cracking like dry porcelain.
She stood completely paralyzed in the entryway, her manicured fingers tightening around the neck of the champagne bottle. Her wide, predatory eyes darted frantically across the absolute nightmare unfolding inside the dining room: the untouched, cooling prime rib sitting alone at the center of the table; the confidential medical files scattered across the floor like dead leaves; Mark, a successful businessman, groveling and sobbing uncontrollably on his hands and knees in a puddle of blood; Lucas hyperventilating in a state of catatonic shock; and Clara, slumped motionless against the dark wainscoting, bleeding out in silence.
"What... what on earth is happening in here?" Vanessa whispered, her voice losing its polished lacquer, taking a slow, instinctive step backward toward the open front door.
"Get out," Lucas choked out.
He didn't even turn his head to look at the woman he had championed and defended just fifteen minutes prior. His voice shattered completely, morphing into a feral, broken, desperate scream that echoed off the high ceilings.
"GET OUT OF OUR HOUSE!"
Vanessa flinched as if she had been physically struck across the face. "Lucas, darling, what is wrong with you? Look at this mess! Who made this disgusting mess?"

Mark didn't even look up at his ex-wife. He ignored Vanessa with a cold, absolute annihilation that was far more terrifying than any rage. His hands were frantically clawing at his pockets, his blood-slicked fingers slipping repeatedly against the sleek glass of his smartphone until he finally managed to punch in three digits.
He brought the phone to his ear, screaming frantically at the 911 dispatcher to send paramedics immediately, his voice cracking into agonizing sobs as he begged them to hurry, reciting the address over and over again like a frantic prayer.
