Chapter 5 - The Honeyed Trap

The silence on the other end of the phone call stretched for several agonizing seconds before Patricia’s faltering voice returned, stripped of its previous venom.

“Valerie, darling... you’re misunderstanding us. That was just late-night stress talking. Families argue, but we love you—”

“You assaulted me in my own home, Marcus threatened me, and you conspired on camera to drug my food,” Valerie interrupted, her tone unwavering. “Enjoy your remaining hours of freedom. The Dallas Police Department already has copies of every file.”

Valerie hung up the phone. She turned to Julian Vance, who was reviewing the digital chain of custody for the video files.

“The trap is fully sprung,” Julian said, sliding a document across the desk. “By attempting to administer a noxious substance and extorting you under duress, Patricia and Marcus have crossed the line from a messy domestic dispute into criminal felony territory. The District Attorney’s office is already reviewing the arrest warrants.”

Valerie took a deep breath, feeling the heavy weight of the past five years finally lifting from her shoulders. For too long, she had prioritized marital harmony over her own safety and self-respect, mistaking endurance for strength.

“What about the company operations?” Valerie asked, her CEO mindset instantly re-engaging.

“Arthur Pendelton has locked down the corporate treasury accounts,” Julian replied. “Marcus’s corporate credit cards, expense accounts, and company vehicles have been frozen as of twenty minutes ago. When he attempts to leave the boardroom, he’ll find his corporate privileges completely revoked.”

Valerie stood up, walking over to the window to look out at the Dallas skyline. The city where she had built her career and protected her family name was waiting. The reckoning had begun, and there was no turning back.
