That evening, after Rachel had left and Leo had drifted off to a peaceful, deep sleep in his crib, I walked down to the ground-floor study.

The wall safe—the very one where I had discovered the dark secret that started this entire journey—was wide open. Inside, the shelves were empty of the old, toxic contracts and secret trusts. Instead, I placed a framed photograph of Leo’s tiny footprint alongside a copy of his birth certificate right on the center shelf.

The past no longer held any power over me. Grant and Vanessa had thought they were writing the script of my life, designing a tragedy where I was cast as the tragic, disposable victim. Instead, they had inadvertently handed me the pen.

I closed the safe door, locked it with a firm, satisfying click, and pocketed the key.
