Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

"To tear down a fortress built on deception, Claire, we can't just throw stones," Rachel said, leaning back in her chair and crossing her legs. She tapped her fountain pen against her chin. "We have to map out every hidden tunnel, every offshore vault, and every co-conspirator. And right now, our most vulnerable link is Vanessa."

"Vanessa?" I scoffed bitterly. "She’s not vulnerable, Rachel. She’s sitting in my house, wearing my clothes, enjoying a lifestyle funded by the very man who treats me like disposable inventory."

"People who betray others for convenience are rarely loyal when the stakes get high," Rachel replied smoothly. She opened a fresh legal pad and began jotting down notes. "Grant thinks he holds all the cards because he controls the corporate machinery. But Vanessa knows things. She lived in your inner circle for thirteen years. She knows where the bodies are buried—literally and figuratively. Let's dig into her background."

For the next three hours, Rachel’s office transformed into an intelligence war room. We pulled up public records, property registries, corporate filings, and old social media archives. What we uncovered sent a chill down my spine.

Thirteen years ago, Vanessa and I had met in college during an organic chemistry lab. I had always believed it was a chance encounter—a spilled beaker of hydrochloric acid, a shared laugh, and an instant friendship that blossomed into sisterhood. But looking at corporate registration documents from five years prior, a grim pattern emerged.

Vanessa’s family hadn't been wealthy; in fact, she had filed for bankruptcy protection shortly before graduating. Yet, miraculously, her student loans had been paid off in full by an anonymous trust fund managed by—of all entities—Duvall & Associates, Charles Duvall’s law firm.

"She wasn't just your friend, Claire," Rachel said, highlighting the name of a shell company on the screen. "She was an investment. The Whitmore family planted her in your orbit years before you even met Grant. When Grant needed a suitable social circle, Vanessa was already there, positioned to steer you toward him, earn your absolute trust, and remain embedded in your life as an inside operative."

The room seemed to spin. Thirteen years of memories—late-night talks, shared secrets, comforting hugs in hospital rooms—flashed before my eyes like scenes from a psychological thriller. Every single comforting gesture Vanessa had ever offered me was tainted. When she held my hand after my first miscarriage, was she comforting me out of genuine sisterly love, or was she reporting back to Grant on my emotional stability and reproductive viability?

"The sick part," I whispered, my voice hollow, "is that she played her part so well. Even when she was standing in my kitchen yesterday, she looked... almost apologetic."

"That’s because actors often start believing their own lies," Rachel said coldly. "But let's use that against them. Fear and guilt are powerful catalysts. If we rattle Vanessa’s cage, she will crack before Grant does."

Rachel picked up her phone and dialed a private investigator she frequently retained for high-net-worth divorce cases. Within minutes, instructions were given to track Vanessa’s financial transactions, property leases, and communications over the past forty-eight hours.

While Rachel worked the phones, my phone buzzed against the coffee table.

An incoming text message from an unknown number.

I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the glass. Slowly, I unlocked the phone and opened the message. It was a photo, taken from across the street through the rain-streaked window of the hotel.

It showed my car parked outside, and below the image was a single line of text:

Don't make this harder than it needs to be, Claire. Sign the papers, take the settlement, and go quietly. You can't win against the family.

It was from Grant. Or perhaps Charles Duvall acting on his behalf. They were watching me. They knew exactly where I was staying.

Instead of feeling intimidated, a cold, sharp smile touched my lips. I screenshot the message, forwarded it directly to Rachel, and replied with three words of my own:

Try and stop me.
