Chapter 8 - Deserted in the Wasteland

The Ohio mansion stood as a hollow skeleton of wood and drywall out in the Midwestern suburbs—a monument to greed and deception.

Marcus had packed his bags and vanished the moment the bank initiated foreclosure proceedings on the half-built property. Eleanor sat alone in her dreary, beige-carpeted living room, surrounded by cardboard boxes containing the few remaining items she hadn't been forced to pawn off to pay her legal fees. The phone on the kitchen counter remained silent. Julian refused to speak to her, having blocked her number entirely after realizing she had sabotaged his entire life.

In the corporate world, Julian’s standing took a massive hit. Known now as the executive who couldn't even manage his own household finances—let alone corporate portfolios—his upward trajectory plateaued, and whispers followed him down every hallway. He lived in a modest, cramped studio apartment far from the lights of Manhattan, eating instant ramen noodles night after night, the irony burning like acid in his throat.

Every time he looked at those cheap noodles, he remembered the exact moment he had slammed his palm onto the walnut table. He remembered screaming that he could have a hundred wives, but only one mother.

Now, he had zero wives, a mother who had bled him dry, and a lifetime of regret that no amount of money could ever wash away. He tried calling Chloe’s lawyers multiple times to plead for mediation, reconciliation, or even a fraction of support, but every single call was met with an impenetrable wall of silence. Chloe had erased him from her life as completely as one wipes dust off a pristine tabletop.
