Chapter 5 - The Paradigm Shattered

Julian’s hands were shaking as he flipped open the folder. The first page was the official deed to the penthouse, clear as day, listing Chloe’s name and her family’s trust as the sole legal entity. No Julian. No bank. No mortgage. It was paid in full, in cash, three years ago—long before Julian had even managed to land his VP position at the firm.

His eyes darted from the paper to Chloe, sheer panic replacing his earlier bravado. "This... this says it's paid off. But Mom... Mom said the mortgage was ten grand a month!"

He turned slowly to look at Eleanor. His mother was no longer looking triumphant. She looked like a cornered animal caught in the headlights of an oncoming train.

"Mom?" Julian's voice cracked, the arrogant facade entirely evaporating. "Where has my money been going?"

Eleanor clutched her pearls, her eyes darting frantically around the room. "Julian, sweetie, you have to understand. Your brother... he's had such a hard time finding his footing. You're so successful! You have a great job, a beautiful home. He just needed a little help getting his dream house in Ohio."

"Twenty-five thousand dollars a month for two years?" Julian shrieked, the reality of his stolen wealth finally breaking through his thick skull. "That's over half a million dollars! You gave my money to Marcus?!"

"It was an investment in our family!" Eleanor cried out, lunging forward to grab his arm.

Julian recoiled as if she had branded him with hot iron. The man who had proudly declared he could have a hundred wives but only one mother was now looking at that mother with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

Chloe leaned against the kitchen island, crossing her arms over her baby bump. "It gets better, Julian. While she was funding her favorite son's mansion, I was paying the HOA fees, the utilities, the groceries, and even those Fifth Avenue shopping sprees your mother loves so much. My savings aren't draining because I'm a parasite. They're draining because I've been subsidizing your delusions of grandeur while your mother robbed you blind."

May you like

"Chloe, please," Julian stammered, pivoting on his heel to face his wife. The cruel tyrant from five minutes ago was gone, replaced by a pathetic, sweating boy. "I didn't know. I swear to God, I had no idea she was doing this. We can fix this. I'll cut her off today. We'll get the money back!"

"No, Julian," Chloe said softly, the finality in her voice echoing in the vast, silent penthouse. "You made your priorities very clear. 'If you cannot live with how things are done under my roof, pack your bags and get the hell out.' Wasn't that what you just said?"
