Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Ledger

Julian strode into the foyer, his posture rigid, followed closely by Eleanor, whose arms were laden with shopping bags bearing the unmistakable gold-embossed logos of Fifth Avenue’s most exclusive designer boutiques.

"Chloe! Are you still lounging around?" Eleanor called out, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that failed to mask the contempt beneath. "Honestly, pregnancy isn't a terminal illness. Look at these pieces I picked up at Bergdorf’s. Julian was so generous to fund them. A woman of my standing simply cannot be seen in last season's couture."

Chloe didn't turn around immediately. She maintained her gaze on the horizon, watching a helicopter trace its path across the twilight sky. Behind her, the soft rustle of tissue paper signaled Eleanor’s habitual unpacking spree—a weekly ritual funded entirely by Julian's salary, or so Julian believed.

The truth was far darker, a reality that Chloe had uncovered only by accident months ago while reviewing household accounting reconciliations. While Julian strutted around corporate boardrooms chest-beating about his twenty-five-thousand-dollar monthly cash flow, not a single penny of those funds was going toward the actual maintenance of their life in Manhattan.

Every single month, like clockwork, Julian’s entire paycheck was funneled directly into a joint account he shared with Eleanor under the guise of "secure family investments and wealth management." In reality, Eleanor was siphoning almost every cent straight to Ohio—to her golden-boy younger son, Marcus, a professional loafer who fancied himself a real estate mogul. Marcus was currently building a sprawling, multi-thousand-square-foot mansion in a gated Ohio suburb, financed entirely by Julian’s blind filial piety and sweat.

And who was paying for the actual groceries, the utilities, the HOA fees, the insurance, and the endless stream of luxury demands that Eleanor imposed upon the household? Chloe.

Using her own private savings—accumulated from her prior career and independent investments—Chloe had quietly absorbed every single living expense for two solid years. She had stayed silent, biting her tongue for the sake of her unborn child, hoping that Julian would eventually wake up and see the manipulation poisoning his mind. But parasites do not let go easily. And ignorance, when wrapped in arrogance, is a formidable armor.

"Julian," Chloe said softly, turning away from the window as her husband loosened his silk tie. "We need to talk about the household budget. We are running low on liquid reserves, and—"

Julian scoffed, cutting her off with a wave of his hand as he tossed his briefcase onto the designer sofa.
