Chapter 9 - Shadows of the Past

I stared at the yellowed envelope in Arthur Vance's hand.

Slowly, I walked across the plush Persian rug and took it from him. The paper was stiff with age. On the front, written in a shaky, forced cursive that vaguely resembled my teenage hand, was a brief note renouncing all claims to the Ross Estate and asking that all communications be routed through Dennis Caldwell.

"Kayla wrote this," I said immediately, the handwriting glaringly obvious to me. "She used to forge my name on hall passes in high school whenever she wanted to skip class."

"I know that now," Arthur said, his jaw tightening. "Dennis approached me six months ago because his logistics empire is bleeding out from the inside. He thought he could use my capital to cover the shortfall before the tax authorities noticed his offshore shell companies."

"And Julian's engagement to Kayla?" I asked.

Arthur let out a disgusted sigh. "A transaction. Dennis offered to sell a forty-percent stake in David's original patent portfolio—patents that Caldwell Logistics had no right to own—in exchange for Julian’s trust fund backing the merger. Kayla pursued Julian aggressively at a gala in Lake Forest. Julian... is young. He was flattered by her attention. He believed she was a sweet, sophisticated girl from a respectable Midwestern industrial family."

Arthur walked over to the mahogany desk, placing both hands on the edge.

"Nina, the patents Dennis stole aren't just industrial designs. They are the foundational temperature-regulation systems currently used in seventy percent of the pharmaceutical supply chains across North America. Dennis has been collecting royalties through a dummy corporation in the Cayman Islands for six years."

My eyes widened. "How much?"

"At least forty-five million dollars," Arthur said flatly. "Money that belongs to you. Every single cent of it."

The room seemed to tilt slightly beneath my feet.

Forty-five million dollars.

I had built Rosetta’s Table through eighty-hour workweeks, through burns on my forearms that left scars I still covered with makeup, through sleepless nights studying commercial leases while my feet ached so badly I couldn't walk down the stairs. I had fought for every dollar, every review, every square foot of kitchen space.

And all the while, Dennis and Eleanor had been sitting on a mountain of wealth stolen from my father’s dying hands, buying Kayla designer dresses and luxury trips while they left me to freeze in an attic with a leaking roof.

"Aaron Levin has already coordinated with the federal prosecutor’s office," Arthur continued, his voice dropping into a register of cold, calculated precision. "Tomorrow morning, all domestic accounts belonging to Caldwell Logistics will be frozen. By Wednesday, Dennis’s assets will be placed into receivership. But that’s just the legal side."

Arthur looked at me, a sharp glint in his eye.

May you like

"David was my brother in everything but blood, Nina. If you want to strip Dennis Caldwell down to the bare brick—if you want to ensure that Eleanor and Kayla never set foot in polite society again—I have the resources to make sure their ruin is total."
