Chapter 21 - The Eleventh Key

I took the silver envelope from Marcus’s hand. The paper felt heavy, woven from expensive linen fiber, and the wax was cold to the touch.

"Diplomatic pouch?" I asked, looking up at him. "We don't have any pending filings in Switzerland. All the Guernsey transfers were closed two weeks ago."

"The courier wouldn't state the sender," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the crowded lobby below with instinctive vigilance. "He only presented a consular pass and stated that the package had been held in a secure temperature-controlled vault in Bern under a standing release order triggered by Eleanor Vance’s formal sentencing."

Eleanor had been sentenced to twenty-five years without parole on Tuesday morning.

I broke the red wax seal with my thumbnail. Inside was a heavy iron key—ancient, completely unlike the modern precision keys to the Rosetta—bearing an engraved Roman numeral *XI* near the bow.

Wrapped around the key was a piece of parchment, yellowed at the edges, written in fresh, dark-black calligraphy ink. The ink smelled faintly of clove and pine oil.

I unfolded the parchment. My heart, which had finally learned to beat at a calm, steady rhythm, gave a violent, stuttering leap against my ribs.

The handwriting did not belong to Dennis Vance. It did not belong to my father’s old legal associates.

It was my father’s personal drafting hand—not from seven years ago, but written with the steady, sharp stroke of an active fountain pen. And at the bottom of the page, the ink was still so fresh that a faint smudge caught my thumb as I touched the paper.

The note read:

*“You cleared the board masterfully, my sweet sparrow. You exposed Eleanor, you reclaimed the limestone, and you proved you could carry the weight of an empire without breaking.*

*Now comes the lesson Dennis couldn't teach you.*

*The body they buried in Oakridge Cemetery in 2016 was not mine. It was a dying vagrant paid two hundred thousand dollars to provide dental records that matched an old file.*

*The vault beneath the Rosetta has eleven doors, Nina. You only unlocked ten.*

*If you want to know who really designed this city—and why Eleanor’s masters are coming for your head before the solstice—take the iron key and descend to Sub-Level 7 tonight at 3:00 AM.*

*Come alone. Because the men who wanted me dead still believe I am in the grave... and if they see you bring Marcus, they will detonate the foundation before you ever hear my voice.”*

I lowered the paper, my breath catching in my throat as the warm spring air of the terrace suddenly turned ice-cold against my skin.

Across the atrium, the grandfather clock in the central lobby began its slow, heavy chime.

Seven strikes until midnight.
