Chapter 51 - The Ninth Gate of the Atlantic

It was not the low, hydraulic groan of Sub-Level 9.
It was not the mechanical counterweights of the *Retribution*.
It was a sharp, violent, seismic jolt that sent the crystal chandeliers swaying wildly from side to side, chiming in a frenzied, chaotic chorus. On the table, Vance’s espresso cup tipped over, spilling dark, bitter coffee across the pristine white linen.
Marcus immediately drew his weapon, stepping between me and the main entrance. "Nina! That didn't come from the cellar. That came from the deep trench!"
Julian Vance had stopped smiling. The color had drained completely from his face, leaving him looking older than the stone beneath our feet. He slowly picked up his malacca cane, his hands visibly trembling as he stared at the floor.
"Julian," I demanded, the command in my voice cutting through the panic of the kitchen staff who were once again tumbling into the hall. "What was that?"
"The *Retribution*..." Vance whispered, his voice barely audible over the sudden, violent rattling of the windowpanes. "The frigate... it wasn't the fleet, Nina."
"What are you talking about?"
"Thomas Sterling didn't build *one* ship in that cavern," Vance said, turning his terror-filled eyes toward me. "The *Retribution* was only the tender. The gatekeeper."
Suddenly, the mechanical telegraph inside the dumbwaiter shaft began to chatter again—not with the steady, measured rhythm of an Admiralty cipher, but with a frantic, stuttering frenzy that tore the paper tape into shredded ribbons.
*Click-click-click-click-CLACK.*
I ran across the Persian rug, ignoring Marcus’s shout, and ripped the remaining tape from the brass feeder.
The message was not in code. It had been sent through an automated deep-sea pressure transponder anchored ten miles off the continental shelf, linked directly to the subterranean sea beneath our boots:
*“WARNING: SECTOR 12 SEAWALL COMPROMISED FROM THE OUTSIDE.**DEPTH: 1,400 FATHOMS.**THE TRENCH IS OPENING.**SOMETHING IS CLIMBING THE SUBMARINE CANYON TOWARD MANHATTAN.**AND IT IS NOT RESPONDING TO THE STERLING CIPHER.”*

Beneath us, eighty feet down, beyond Sub-Level 9, beyond the submerged hull of the *Retribution*, the granite floor of the world itself split with an ear-splitting crack.
And then, from the bottom of the black water, miles out in the Atlantic darkness, came a low, living roar that shook the very stars above the city.
