Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

By Wednesday afternoon, the storm clouds gathered over the Vance family empire broke with devastating force.
Emily and I were sitting in my living room when the local news alert flashed on the television screen. The anchorwoman’s face was solemn as she broadcasted live from downtown outside the federal courthouse.
"Breaking news this afternoon: Federal agents from the IRS and the FBI have executed simultaneous search and seizure warrants on the downtown headquarters of Vance Holdings LLC, as well as the multi-million-dollar estate of prominent philanthropist Margaret Vance. Authorities have frozen all corporate and personal assets amid a sweeping federal investigation into multi-million-dollar financial fraud, tax evasion, and racketeering..."
Emily dropped her phone onto the sofa, her jaw slack in sheer disbelief. She stared at the screen as footage showed federal agents carrying multiple cardboard boxes of evidence and hard drives out of Margaret’s sprawling mansion while reporters swarmed the gates.
"Is this... is this real?" Emily whispered, rubbing her eyes as if she were waking up from a bizarre dream. "Did you... did you do this, Mom?"
"I just pointed the federal government in the direction of the bodies they buried," I smiled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "Margaret thought her money made her invincible. She thought she could crush you under her heel and walk away laughing. She forgot that crime leaves tracks, and federal investigators love nothing more than arrogant people who think they're above the law."
Just then, my department-issued cell phone rang. It was Detective Miller.
"Sarah," Miller's voice came through the speaker, sounding remarkably amused. "You might want to turn on the precinct holding cell security feed if you have a moment."
"What's happening?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Daniel just saw the news report on the television in the common area," Miller laughed. "Let’s just say he didn't take it well. He tried to rip the bolted-down table right out of the floor, screamed so loud he lost his voice, and is currently weeping in the corner because he realized his mother can't even afford to buy him a candy bar anymore, let alone bail him out of federal prison."
"And Margaret?" I asked.
"Federal marshals picked her up an hour ago for questioning. Her high-priced lawyers just dumped her as a client the second the asset freeze hit their escrow accounts," Miller said with satisfaction. "Karma is a wonderfully efficient machine, Officer Carter."
Emily let out a breath she seemed to have been holding for years—years of emotional abuse, subtle gaslighting, disrespect, and financial control at the hands of the Vance family. The tension that had locked her shoulders since the day she married Daniel finally melted away.

"It’s over," Emily whispered, a genuine, radiant smile breaking through her tears. "I’m actually free."
"Not just free, sweetie," I corrected gently, handing her a fresh cup of coffee. "Victorious."
