Chapter 4 - The Threat at the Hospital

True to Detective Miller's warning, Daniel was released on bond by noon on Monday. But instead of laying low or fleeing town, his first move was an act of supreme, unhinged arrogance: he showed up at St. Jude Memorial Hospital, where Emily worked as an ICU charge nurse.
I had insisted on driving Emily to work that morning, refusing to let her out of my sight. I was sitting in my unmarked cruiser parked in the hospital’s secure staff parking garage, running paperwork, when my radio crackled to life.
"Officer Carter, security desk to the main ICU floor. We have an unauthorized visitor causing a disturbance. He's demanding to see Nurse Emily."
My heart stopped for a fraction of a second before my training kicked in with terrifying speed. I threw the cruiser into reverse, tires squealing against the concrete, and tore toward the main entrance.
Up on the fourth floor, chaos had erupted in the usually sterile, quiet hallways of the intensive care unit.
Daniel was standing right in the middle of the nurses' station, his suit jacket off, his tie loosened, screaming at the top of his lungs. Two security guards were trying to physically restrain him, but he was thrashing like a wild animal.
"I am her husband! You legally cannot keep me away from my wife!" Daniel roared, his face purple with rage, spittle flying from his lips. "Emily! Get out here right now! You think a little police badge from your mommy is going to save you? Drop the charges, you ungrateful bitch, or I swear to God I will ruin your life!"
Emily stepped out of a patient’s room down the hall. She didn't cower. She didn't run. She walked slowly, with absolute, chilling composure, holding a clipboard against her chest like a shield.
"Security, get him out of my hospital," Emily said, her voice cutting cleanly through his screaming.
"Emily!" Daniel lunged forward, breaking past one of the guards, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You signed your life away to me! That money is mine! You hear me? Mine!"
Before he could take another step toward her, I rounded the corner from the stairwell, my hand resting firmly on my service weapon, my face a mask of stone.
"End of the line, Daniel," I said, closing the distance between us in three long strides.
Daniel spun around, his expression twisting into pure, unadulterated hatred when he saw me. "You! You think you're untouchable because you carry a badge! This is a domestic dispute, you corrupt bitch! You're abusing your power!"
"You're violating a mandatory stay-away protective order issued less than three hours ago by a judge," I replied smoothly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from my belt with a crisp click. "And you're doing it on hospital property while terrorizing medical staff and patients."
I stepped inside his guard, grabbing his wrist with practiced precision and wrenching his arm behind his back before he even had time to process my movement. He let out a sharp cry of pain as I slammed him face-first against the clean white wall of the nurses' station.
"You have the right to remain silent," I recited into his ear, my voice icy and calm, pressing the cold steel cuffs onto his wrists with a satisfying snap. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The entire ICU floor watched in stunned silence as I hauled Daniel down the hallway toward the elevators. As the doors slid open to take him back down to the very holding cells he had just been released from hours earlier, I caught a glimpse of Emily standing down the hall. She gave me a slow, proud nod.
Bail revoked. Game over. Or so I foolishly thought.
