Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

Dawn hadn't even broken yet when I pulled my unmarked cruiser into the nondescript parking lot of the federal building downtown. Inside, waiting for me in a cramped, windowless office illuminated only by the harsh glow of dual monitors, was Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to Margaret, thankfully—a veteran forensic accountant with the Internal Revenue Service.

"You look like hell, Sarah," Marcus greeted without looking away from his screen, scrolling through endless columns of bank routing numbers and offshore wire transfers.

"Sleep is overrated, Marcus. Did you find what I asked for?" I pulled up a chair beside him, dropping a steaming cup of black coffee onto his desk.

Marcus took the coffee with a grateful nod, clicked his mouse three times, and spun the monitor toward me. "Your hunch was spot on, Sarah. Margaret Vance isn't just a wealthy socialite; she’s the primary financial architect of a massive corporate shell game designed to hide millions in taxable assets from the government and defraud creditors."

I leaned in, scanning the glowing lines of data. "Show me."

"Look at this subsidiary here: Vance Holdings LLC," Marcus pointed with his pen. "On paper, it's a real estate investment firm managed by Margaret. But if you trace the capital flow over the last three years, it’s actually a slush fund. Whenever Daniel needed capital to fund his high-risk crypto trading or pay off his gambling debts, Margaret funneled money through this shell company disguised as 'family loans' to avoid gift taxes and shield the funds from legal judgments."

"And the fifty thousand dollars Emily saved?" I asked, my blood running cold. "Did they route that through here too?"

"Not yet, but that was their exact plan," Marcus grinned grimly. "Once they forced Emily to unlock her banking app, the money was scheduled to be automatically transferred into a holding account managed by Vance Holdings, effectively swallowing it into the corporate void where Emily would never see a dime of it in a divorce proceeding."

I let out a long, slow breath, a heavy weight lifting off my chest. "Financial fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. That's a federal rap, isn't it, Marcus?"

"Oh, it's more than that," Marcus chuckled darkly, typing furiously on his keyboard. "Because these shell companies crossed state lines and involved federally insured banking institutions, this crosses over into federal jurisdiction. The FBI's financial crimes unit is already looking at the preliminary data I sent them an hour ago."

"Can you issue an immediate federal seizure warrant on Vance Holdings?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"With your signed affidavit and the physical evidence you recovered from the house—plus the audio recording of Margaret admitting they were trying to steal Emily's money—we can freeze every single asset Margaret and Daniel own by noon today," Marcus said firmly, printing out a stack of documents and sliding them across the desk. "Sign here, Officer Carter. Let's dismantle an empire."
