Chapter 19 - The Confession on the Pier

Arthur sputtered, choking on brine and foam, struggling to find purchase on the slick floorboards. He tried to rise, his hand reaching for the combat knife sheathed at his tactical vest.
He looked up directly into the twin black barrels of Eleanor’s shotgun, resting precisely two inches from the bridge of his nose.
"Don't do it, Arthur," Eleanor said. Her gray hair was soaked with seawater, her face splattered with rain and salt, but her eyes burned with the unyielding fire of a woman who had spent fifty years taming the earth and surviving human treachery. "My son broke my ribs, and I survived. You won't survive this."
Arthur froze, his hands opening, slowly lifting out of the swirling water.
Ten minutes later, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the drenched pines outside. Detective Marcus Vance, having abandoned his squad car half a mile down the road due to the surge, charged through the front door with his service weapon drawn, followed by four tactical officers in full storm gear.
They found Arthur Vance zip-tied securely to the heavy cast-iron legs of Eleanor’s kitchen table, soaking wet and shivering from hypothermia. Down in the basement, the second intruder was handcuffed, nursing a dislocated shoulder.
Eleanor was sitting calmly at the undamaged end of the counter, Thomas’s field jacket pulled tightly around her, holding her warm cup of Earl Grey tea that she had managed to brew on the propane camping stove.
"You took your time, Detective," Eleanor noted mildly, taking a sip.
Marcus stared at the blown-out window, the shattered drywall, the disarmed mercenaries, and then at the seventy-two-year-old woman holding a shotgun across her knees. He slowly holstered his weapon, letting out a long, incredulous breath.
"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, shaking his head with profound respect. "The federal marshals raided Vincent Cruz’s estate in Newport twenty minutes ago. Based on your daughter's sworn deposition and the encrypted phone records we pulled from Arthur Vance's vehicle, Cruz is officially in custody. The whole syndicate is coming down. The land at Whispering Pines is safe. The federal environmental registry has locked the mineral rights into a permanent federal preserve. Nobody is ever going to dig up your husband’s valley."

Eleanor closed her eyes, letting the words wash over her.
Whispering Pines was safe. Thomas’s sacrifice was finally complete. Her children were paying their debt to society, and the men who had orchestrated their greed were bound in chains.
