Chapter 18 - The Siege of the Saltwater Cottage

The back door’s reinforced glass shivered under the impact of a hydraulic pry bar. With a sharp *crack*, the frame gave way, and two men dressed in black foul-weather tactical gear slipped through the mudroom. They carried silenced semi-automatic pistols, moving with military discipline.

"Search the ground floor. If she resists, neutralize her," a voice instructed over the howling wind outside. It was Arthur Vance—the polished corporate emissary, no longer wearing his bespoke suit, now armed with lethal intent.

They moved toward the kitchen island.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic clatter echoed from the basement stairwell. Arthur signaled his companion, a broad-shouldered enforcer who immediately moved toward the open basement door, weapon drawn, flashlight held low beneath his gun barrel.

He took two steps down the wooden stairs.

He didn't see the monofilament tripwire Eleanor had strung across the third riser—a trick Thomas had used forty years ago to catch midnight poachers in the Whispering Pines apple orchards. The man’s boot caught the wire, triggering an ancient, spring-loaded iron hay-hook Eleanor had rigged to the ceiling rafters. The heavy steel hook swung through the dark with terrifying force, smashing directly into the intruder’s shoulder and sending him tumbling headlong down the flight of stairs, his gun firing wildly into the concrete foundation before he landed unconscious at the bottom.

Arthur Vance spun around, his pistol raised. "Eleanor!" he screamed above the wind. "Give up the documents! You’re an old woman living on borrowed time!"

"I earned every day of my time, Mr. Vance!"

Her voice didn't come from the basement. It came from the top of the pantry counter. Eleanor was standing behind the sturdy partition wall where she had stored her canning jars, perfectly shielded from direct fire.

Arthur fired three silenced rounds into the drywall. Plaster exploded in white plumes, but the bullets struck the steel reinforcing plates Eleanor had installed behind the sheetrock the day after Julian was convicted.

Before Arthur could adjust his aim, Eleanor stepped out with the twelve-gauge shotgun. She didn't aim to kill; she aimed at the massive floor-to-ceiling plate-glass window directly behind him that looked out onto the raging Atlantic ocean.

*BOOM!*

The twelve-gauge roared, shattering the entire eight-foot tempered glass panel into ten thousand shards.

The gale-force storm wind rushed into the kitchen like a living beast, accompanied by a colossal, six-foot ocean surge that broke over the sea wall at that exact moment. A deluge of freezing saltwater, seaweed, and debris exploded through the blown-out window, slamming Arthur Vance off his feet and pinning him violently against the kitchen island. His weapon was ripped from his grip, lost in the swirling, knee-deep floodwater pouring across the hardwood.
