Chapter 16 - Fractured Loyalties

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the tire ruts carved deep into Eleanor’s front lawn. Two state trooper cruisers were parked along her driveway, their amber lights slowly rotating.

Inside, Detective Sergeant Marcus Vance (no relation to Eleanor or the mysterious Arthur) stood sipping coffee, reviewing the paraffin-coated documents Eleanor had laid across the kitchen island. Marcus was a quiet, thickset man who had seen enough human misery to recognize an honest victim when he saw one.

"This is big, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, tracing his thumb over Hector Cruz's signature. "Vincent Cruz is currently under federal indictment for wire fraud and corporate extortion in three states, but the U.S. Attorney hasn't been able to pin him to an active violent conspiracy. This paper... this establishes the motive for Julian’s assault on you, the pressure on your family, and last night’s home invasion."

"They aren't going to stop, Detective," Eleanor replied, setting down her teacup. "Julian was just the front line. Cruz thinks I’m an old woman who will eventually fold if he applies enough pressure. He thinks my daughter will help him."

"Rachel?" Marcus frowned. "She’s locked up at the minimum-security facility in Danbury."

"She’s in Danbury, but she’s talking to someone," Eleanor said. "The typewriter ribbon used for that letter I received last week? It matches the vintage Smith-Corona machines kept in the prison law library for inmate filings. Rachel didn't write it—she doesn't have the discipline. But she facilitated it. She traded information on Thomas’s desk for commissary credits or protection."

Eleanor took out her phone. "Get me a transport order to the Danbury facility, Detective. It’s time I spoke to my daughter without the attorneys present."

Two hours later, Eleanor sat in an administrative interview room at the Danbury Federal Correctional Institution. When Rachel was escorted in, she didn't look like the manicured, high-end real estate agent who had sneered at her mother's simple life. Her hair was pulled back in a tangled knot, her orange jumpsuit ill-fitting. When she saw Eleanor, she stopped in her tracks, her lips trembling.

"Mom?" Rachel’s voice cracked.

"Sit down, Rachel," Eleanor commanded softly.

Rachel sank into the chair, tears immediately spilling over her cheeks. "Mom, I’m so sorry... Julian told me we were just going to scare you, that you were hoarding Dad’s legacy... I didn't know he was going to hit you! I swear on my life, I didn't know!"

"You watched him do it," Eleanor said, her voice ice-cold. "You stood by the pantry counter and counted down twenty minutes while I was bleeding on the linoleum. You told me my time was up."

Rachel buried her face in her cuffed hands, sobbing violently. "Cruz came to my house first, Mom! Before Julian! He told me he’d burn my kids' college funds, that he’d expose my tax filings! Julian took the fall for the debt, but Cruz owns us! He told me if I didn't help him find the 1982 survey map in Dad’s desk, he’d have Julian killed in state prison!"

"And so you traded your father’s memory to save Julian's skin?" Eleanor leaned across the table. "Look at me, Rachel."

Rachel slowly raised her tear-streaked face.

"Julian made his choice. You made yours. But you are still my daughter, and I will not let Cruz destroy what is left of this family’s name," Eleanor said firmly. "You are going to sign a sworn deposition detailing every meeting, every phone call, and every dollar Cruz promised you. You do this, and I will make sure you survive your sentence. You refuse, and you will face federal conspiracy charges that will keep you in this cage until your hair is as gray as mine."

Rachel swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "I’ll sign. I’ll tell them everything."
