Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Deliberations lasted precisely three hours and fourteen minutes.

At 4:45 PM, the buzzer echoed through the courtroom, signaling that a verdict had been reached. Judge Henderson took his seat, adjusting his glasses as the foreperson of the jury stood up and handed a crisp white envelope to the bailiff.

The courtroom fell into an absolute, breathless hush.

"On Count One: Assault in the First Degree with a Deadly Weapon," the foreperson read clearly, her voice ringing off the mahogany walls, "we find the defendant, Evan Thomas Bennett, Guilty."

"On Count Two: Reckless Endangerment Resulting in Serious Physical Injury," she continued, "we find the defendant Guilty."

"On Count Three: Unlawful Administering of Harmful Substances," she concluded, "we find the defendant Guilty."

Evan didn't scream. He didn't cry out. He simply closed his eyes, dropped his head forward until his forehead rested against the cold wooden surface of the defense table, and let out a long, ragged shudder of defeat.

Two bailiffs stepped forward, their heavy hands resting securely on Evan’s shoulders. They clicked the steel handcuffs into place with a sharp, final snap, hoisted him to his feet, and led him away through the side door toward holding.

Judge Henderson banged his gavel once. "Sentencing will take place in thirty days. The defendant is remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections without bond. Court is adjourned."

Rachel sat quietly in her gallery seat, Daniel’s hand locked firmly around hers. She reached up with her right hand and touched the thin, pale line on her cheek. It ached faintly—a permanent reminder of what she had survived—but the darkness that had haunted her since her thirty-second birthday party had finally lifted, replaced by the clean, bright air of absolute justice.
