Chapter 6 - The Discovery in the Garage

Two weeks after the arrest, Rachel and Daniel drove out to Evan’s suburban house to help Melissa pack up her things and move out. Melissa had filed for an emergency divorce and a restraining order within forty-eight hours of the arrest, completely cutting all ties with her incarcerated husband.
The house felt hollow, echoing with the ghost of a suburban American dream built on quicksand and credit card debt. Boxes were stacked high in the entryway.
"I'm so sorry, Rachel," Melissa whispered as they carried a box of kitchenware out to the trunk of Melissa’s sedan. Her eyes were red, her hands shaking slightly. "I had no idea. He told me he was just doing DIY repairs in the garage when I asked about the staple gun. I swear to God, if I had known..."
"I know, Mel," Rachel said, squeezing her former sister-in-law's shoulder. "It’s not your fault. You were his victim, too—you just didn't know it yet."
While Melissa went back inside to pack the last of her clothes, Rachel walked out toward the detached garage. The crime scene tape had been removed by police three days prior, but the heavy oak side door remained unlocked.
Rachel pushed the door open and stepped inside.
The garage smelled of motor oil, gasoline, and stale sawdust. Evan’s pristine workbench—the centerpiece of his weekend hobby projects—was cleared off except for a heavy yellow plastic toolbox and a half-empty can of WD-40.
Rachel walked over to the workbench, her fingers tracing the edge of the scarred wood. She looked down at the open drawer where the pneumatic staple gun had been recovered by police. Inside the drawer, tucked beneath a pile of old receipts and spare drywall screws, sat a small, leather-bound notebook with a brass clasp.
Curiosity overriding her common sense, Rachel picked up the notebook and flipped it open.
The pages were filled with Evan’s messy, hurried handwriting. It wasn't a diary; it was a catalog.
Project #1 (Breakroom Donuts): Success. Miller choked on the glaze for ten seconds. Classic reaction.
Project #2 (Accounting Laxatives): Moderate success. Henderson missed three days of work. Hilarious group chat response.
Project #3 (The Boardroom Chair): Epic. Davis cracked his tailbone. HR bought the excuse that the chair was old.
Project #4 (Birthday Sheet Cake - Target: Marcus): Special formulation. Heavy-gauge stainless staples embedded in vanilla buttercream. Objective: Total public humiliation.
Rachel stared at the final entry, her stomach churning. There was no remorse written on the page—only a crude drawing of a smiling face covered in blood, with a note scribbled in the margin: If Marcus doesn't take the first piece, someone else will learn a lesson about paying attention.

She carefully closed the notebook, walked back out to the driveway, and handed it directly to Detective Kim, who had arrived to oversee the final property handover.
Kim flipped through the pages, her eyebrows lifting higher with every turn. She looked up at Rachel, a grim, satisfied smile touching the corners of her mouth. "Well, Ms. Bennett. It looks like your brother just wrote his own guilty verdict. This isn't just an assault case anymore—this is a textbook definition of a patterned, premeditated terror campaign."
