Chapter 5 - The Family Fractures

The fallout within the Bennett family was swift, absolute, and merciless.

By Tuesday evening, news of Evan’s arrest had leaked to the local Kansas City news outlets, complete with a dramatic chyron reading: SUBURBAN MAN ARRESTED AFTER RIGGING BIRTHDAY CAKE WITH INDUSTRIAL STAPLES. Neighbors interviewed by reporters talked about "the quiet, polite young man who always kept his lawn immaculate," completely unaware of the industrial staple gun sitting in his garage workbench.

Their mother, Eleanor Bennett, called Rachel forty times in three hours. When Rachel finally answered, Eleanor’s voice was a shattered, hysterical wreck.

"How could you let them arrest him, Rachel?" Eleanor sobbed through the phone speaker. "He’s your brother! It was a stupid mistake! Families don't put each other in prison!"

"Mom, he put metal staples in a cake and shoved it into my face," Rachel said, her voice completely devoid of warmth. "If you had cut that first piece like you wanted to, those staples would have shredded your esophagus. Do you understand that? He didn't care who ate it."

"He didn't mean to hurt you!" Eleanor wailed, proving in a single sentence that her capacity for denial had no bottom. "He was aiming at Marcus! You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time!"

Rachel ended the call, blocked her mother’s number, and tossed her phone onto the living room sofa. She walked over to the bathroom mirror, turned on the vanity light, and carefully unpeeled the edge of the surgical tape on her left cheek.

The cut was angry, red, and swollen, stitched shut with five neat black sutures by a plastic surgeon earlier that morning. It would leave a permanent, jagged line just beneath her eye—a physical map of Evan’s twisted sense of humor, branded onto her skin forever.

"How are you holding up?" Daniel asked softly, stepping into the bathroom doorway and leaning against the frame.

"I’m tired," Rachel said, staring at her reflection. "I’m tired of making excuses for him. I’m tired of Mom covering for him. I’m tired of living in a world where people think cruelty is just entertainment."

"He's going away, Rach," Daniel said, stepping closer and wrapping his arms gently around her waist, careful not to brush her face. "The grand jury indicted him on three counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon this morning. Bail was denied. He’s staying in Jackson County Detention Center until trial."

Rachel leaned back against Daniel’s chest, closing her eyes as the tension slowly drained out of her shoulders. "Good."
