Chapter 9 - A New Chapter

Two years later, the anniversary of that terrifying twenty-seven-minute drive arrived quietly.
I had taken the day off work—not because I needed to hide or mourn, but because I wanted to celebrate. Lily was seven now, a bright, bubbly second-grader with a fierce laugh, a passion for art class, and a purple belt in introductory children's karate—a class Rachel had proudly enrolled her in "just so she knows how to base out and protect her space."
We were sitting in the backyard of the new house we had bought together—Rachel, Lily, and I. It was a cozy little craftsman home with a wide front porch and a big oak tree in the yard where Rachel had hung a sturdy wooden rope swing.
"Mommy! Watch this!" Lily called out, pumping her legs furiously and soaring high into the air on the swing, her laughter ringing out like wind chimes in the afternoon breeze.
I sat on the porch steps, sipping iced tea, while Rachel walked over from the garden hose, wiping dirt off her hands with a rag. She sat down beside me on the wooden step, resting her elbows on her knees.
"She's growing up too fast," Rachel murmured, watching Lily soar through the air with a soft, affectionate smile.
"She is," I agreed, leaning my head against my sister's shoulder. "Sometimes I still think about that phone call. About how close we came to losing her light."
Rachel reached over, taking my hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze. "We didn't lose her. She's right here. And she's stronger than ever."
"We owe all of that to you," I whispered.
"We owe it to each other," Rachel corrected gently. "Family doesn't just mean sharing blood, Sarah. It means showing up when the door is locked and the walls are caving in. And we always show up."
Lily caught sight of us talking, dragged her feet to slow the swing down, and came running across the grass toward the porch.

"What are you guys talking about?" she asked, panting slightly, her cheeks flushed pink from the sun.
"We were just talking about how lucky we are to have each other," I smiled, opening my arms as Lily dived straight into a warm, joyful hug.
