Chapter 6 - The Fallout

Three days later, the quiet of my apartment felt heavy, laden with the ghosts of what might have been.

Lily was sitting on the living room rug, happily coloring in a new book Rachel had bought her, completely absorbed in making a T-Rex bright green. Every time a car drove by outside, her little shoulders would tense for a fraction of a second before relaxing again as she realized she was safe.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was an email from my divorce attorney, Arthur. I opened it with trembling fingers.

Sarah, attached are the emergency custody modification filings. Given the police report, the medical examination, and the corroborated statement from your sister regarding Daniel’s willful negligence, the judge has granted an ex parte order granting you sole physical and legal custody immediately. Daniel has been served. He has twenty-four hours to respond, but given the criminal investigation hanging over Vanessa’s head, his counsel is advising him not to contest.

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for three days.

"What does it say?" Rachel asked, walking into the living room with a tray of sliced apples and cheese for Lily. She wiped her hands on a kitchen towel and sat down across from me on the sofa.

"We won," I whispered, tears spilling over my lashes, though this time they were tears of profound relief. "Sole custody. Daniel can't come near her without supervised visits, and Vanessa is facing felony child abuse charges."

Rachel nodded slowly, a grim sense of satisfaction settling over her features. "Good. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes."

"I don't know how to thank you, Rach," I said, reaching across the table to squeeze her hand. "If you hadn't been there... if you had hesitated for even one second..."

"Don't even think about that," Rachel interrupted firmly, her grip tightening around my fingers. "Family is family. Nobody touches my niece. Nobody."

Before I could reply, the doorbell rang.

Lily froze, her green crayon hovering over the page. Her eyes darted toward the door, wide with sudden panic.

"Hey, hey, look at me," Rachel said instantly, dropping to her knees right in front of Lily and taking the little girl's hands. "You are safe. Nobody is getting through that door unless I say so. Remember? I'm the baddest aunt in the state."

Lily let out a tiny, watery giggle, the tension in her small shoulders melting away.

"Go check it out, Auntie Rach," Lily whispered.

"On it," Rachel winked, standing up and striding toward the front door with the steady, unbothered confidence of someone who feared nothing.
