Chapter 10 - Unbreakable

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Ohio sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.
Inside the house, dinner was simmering on the stove, and the radio was playing a soft, upbeat melody. There was no fear in our home anymore—only laughter, safety, and the quiet, enduring strength of a family rebuilt from the ashes of betrayal.
We had survived the worst life could throw at us. We had faced cowardice, cruelty, and terror, and we had come out the other side entirely unbroken.
"Hey, Auntie Rach?" Lily asked, looking up from the porch floor where she was tying a friendship bracelet around Rachel's wrist.
"Yeah, kiddo?" Rachel smiled, looking down at her niece.
"Can we get ice cream before bedtime tonight? As a reward for finishing my homework?"
Rachel looked at me, raising an eyebrow with a playful grin.
"Well," Rachel said, winking at Lily. "According to the rules of the kingdom, the guard approves all ice cream requests. But only if you can beat me in a race to the kitchen."
Lily let out a squeal of pure delight, jumped to her feet, and bolted toward the back door, shouting over her shoulder, "You're gonna lose!"

Rachel laughed, leaping off the porch with the effortless agility of a champion, letting Lily win by half a step as they burst through the screen door together into the warm, glowing light of home.
I stood up, following them inside, knowing with absolute certainty that no matter what tomorrow brought, we would face it together—unshakable, untouchable, and forever safe.
