Chapter 9 - The Federal Trap

I vaulted down the stairs of the underground bunker two at a time, my hand gripping my SIG MPX as I reached the main command center. The monitors were flashing red.

Four black armored vans bearing Department of Justice insignias had smashed through our front gates, disgorging dozens of heavily armed federal tactical agents in full riot gear. But behind them, half a dozen unmarked sedans pulled up, spilling out Marcone’s enforcers wearing stolen tactical vests.

It wasn't a legitimate federal raid. It was a coordinated hit—a corrupt faction of the DOJ working in direct collusion with the syndicate, using government authority to snatch Noah out of my house under the guise of a "protective custody warrant."

“Boss, they’re breaching the front doors with a hydraulic ram!” Marcus’s voice shouted over the comms from the foyer. “Do we fire on federal officers?”

"Hold your fire!" I ordered immediately, my mind racing through the tactical implications. If my men opened fire on federal agents, even corrupt ones, the full weight of the United States military would descend upon my estate within the hour. Marcone knew this. It was a checkmate move designed to force me into a corner where I couldn't shoot back.

“They’re inside!” Marcus yelled. “They’re heading toward the family wing!”

I didn't hesitate. I slammed my fist onto the emergency lockdown button for the bunker, securing the vault doors, and sprinted toward the private elevator that led directly up to the family quarters.

When the elevator doors slid open on the second floor, the hallway was a scene of controlled chaos. Federal agents in tactical helmets were advancing down the corridor, their assault rifles raised, while a sleek, sharply dressed man in an expensive gray suit—Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance, Victor’s cousin—walked at their center, holding a piece of paper aloft.

"Richard Vale! Stand down! You are harboring a minor of extraordinary national security interest under federal warrant!" Thomas Vance shouted, his voice echoing off the walls.

Marcus and two of my guards were pinned against the wall, their weapons confiscated, their hands zip-tied behind their backs.

I stepped out of the elevator, my hands raised slowly, deliberately, keeping my body positioned directly between the federal agents and the doorway to the children's room.

"A federal warrant, Thomas?" I said, my voice dripping with cold, venomous sarcasm as I stared down the corrupt prosecutor. "Funny, usually federal judges require actual probable cause, not just a bribe from Salvatore Marcone passed through your family's offshore accounts."

Thomas Vance’s face flushed red. "Watch your tongue, Vale. That boy possesses anomalous biological capabilities that the government has a right to study. Hand him over quietly, and we won't charge you with harboring a fugitive and obstruction of justice."

"You want the boy?" I stepped forward, my eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You'll have to go through me first."

Before Thomas could signal the tactical team to subdue me, the door behind me creaked open.

Noah stepped out into the hallway.

He wasn't hiding. He wasn't shaking. He stood tall, his amber eyes fixed directly on Thomas Vance with an unsettling, ancient calm.

"You want me?" Noah’s small voice cut through the tense silence of the corridor. "I'll go with you. Just leave them alone."

"Noah, no!" Lila cried out from behind him, trying to rush forward, but Claire caught her by the shoulders, holding her back while tears streamed down my wife's face.

Thomas Vance smiled—a cold, triumphant smirk of a corrupt man who thought he had won. "Smart kid. Grab him!"

Two federal agents lunged forward, reaching out to grab Noah's arms.

Something inside me snapped. The veneer of civilization vanished. I lunged forward to intercept them, but before my hands could touch the agents, a blinding flash of white light erupted from Noah’s body, filling the entire hallway with a radiant, deafening energy.
