Chapter 7 - The Council of Shadows

By dawn, the blood on the marble foyer had been scrubbed clean, and the broken vases replaced, but the atmosphere inside the mansion was charged with the high-voltage tension of a war room.
I sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table in my underground command center—a high-tech bunker hidden beneath the wine cellar, equipped with satellite uplinks, encrypted servers, and monitors displaying live feeds of every major intersection in Chicago.
Standing around the table were my four most trusted capos: Marcus, my security chief; Dante, who controlled the shipping ports; Frankie, who managed our financial fronts; and Joey, our eyes and ears on the South Side.
"Marcone is making his move," I said, tossing a heavy leather folder onto the center of the table. Inside were photographs of Marcone’s inner circle meeting at an upscale steakhouse in downtown Chicago late last night. "He thinks my focus is divided because of the children. He thinks the boy makes us vulnerable."
"Boss, with all due respect," Frankie adjusted his glasses nervously, "half the commission is whispering about what happened at the charity gala. Word gets around that you've got an eight-year-old kid performing medical miracles under your roof. The underworld smells blood. They think it's some kind of supernatural asset. Marcone wants control of it."
"Nobody controls Noah," I snapped, my voice cracking like a whip. The men around the table flinched slightly. They knew that tone; it was the tone that preceded a bloodbath. "Noah is a member of this family now. Anyone who touches him answers to me."
"Understood, boss," Marcus muttered, crossing his massive arms over his tactical vest. "What are our orders? Do we hit their warehouses on 22nd Street?"
"No," I replied, leaning forward, resting my forearms on the table, my steel-gray eyes locking onto each of my commanders in turn. "We don't raid them. We cut off their oxygen. Frankie, freeze every shell company Marcone uses to launder his drug money through the Cayman accounts. Dante, shut down his import channels at the harbor—nothing comes in or out without my explicit clearance. Joey, find out which politicians on the city council are taking Marcone's bribe money, and bring me their ledgers by nightfall."
A grim, satisfied smile spread across Marcus’s face. "A financial siege. We starve them out before we put them down."
"Exactly," I said, standing up from my chair. "Marcone wants a war over a miracle? I'll show him what an empire looks like when it decides to crush an ant."
As my men filed out of the bunker to execute the orders, I lingered behind, looking up at the monitors. On screen three, a feed from the upstairs living room showed Noah sitting on the carpet playing chess with Leo, while Claire watched with a soft, warm smile, pouring them both glasses of juice.

For the first time in three years, my house sounded like a home again. Laughter echoed softly through the intercom speakers—a sound I had thought was lost forever.
I touched the scar on my knuckles, feeling the heavy burden of my past, but for the first time, I didn't feel weighed down by it. I had something worth fighting for.
