Chapter 10 - The Empire of Family

The light didn't blind us; it purified.

As the brilliant white energy washed over the federal agents and Marcone’s men, their aggressive postures instantly dissolved. The assault rifles slipped from their grips, clattering heavily onto the carpet. Thomas Vance dropped to his knees, his arrogant smirk replaced by a look of profound, overwhelming peace as the glowing energy stripped away the greed, corruption, and malice buried deep within his soul.

Within seconds, every single corrupt agent and syndicate enforcer slumped softly to the floor, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.

The hallway fell dead silent.

The glowing aura around Noah faded, and the boy swayed on his feet, his eyes fluttering shut as exhaustion finally claimed him.

I moved faster than thought, catching him in my arms before he could hit the floor. I pulled him tightly against my chest, feeling his steady, calm heartbeat against mine.

Claire rushed out of the room, throwing her arms around both of us, while Leo and Lila buried their faces against my shoulder, sobbing tears of relief.

Marcus, having managed to snap his zip-ties using a hidden blade in his boot, stood up and looked around the hallway at the sleeping tactical team in stunned disbelief. "Well... I'll be damned," he muttered.

"Marcus," I said, my voice steady and resolute as I cradled Noah in my arms.

"Boss?"

"Call our contacts in the Department of Justice—the clean ones. Send copies of Thomas Vance’s offshore bank ledgers, along with the audio logs of this raid, to the Attorney General and the national press by sunrise. Marcone's political protection just went up in smoke."

"Consider it done," Marcus grinned, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone.

I carried Noah back into his bedroom, gently laying him down beneath the warm blankets. He stirred slightly, a tiny, peaceful smile touching the corners of his lips as he curled onto his side.

I sat down on the edge of the bed, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead, feeling Claire’s hand come to rest reassuringly on my shoulder while our twins leaned against my legs.

The empire I had built was forged in blood, fear, and iron. For decades, I believed that power was measured by how many men feared your name, how much money sat in your vaults, and how tightly you could squeeze your enemies' throats.

But looking at my children—running, laughing, and whole—and looking at the little boy who had brought a miracle into our dark world, I finally understood the truth.

True power wasn't about control. It was about who you protected. And the family you chose to keep.

I wrapped my arm around Claire and pulled my children close, looking out the window as the first golden rays of dawn broke over the Chicago skyline.

We had won. We were safe. And for the first time in my life, Richard Vale was exactly where he belonged.
