Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

As the police sirens wailed in the distance, scattering Moretti’s remaining enforcers into the dark alleys of the harbor, the warehouse yard grew eerily still.

Antonio walked over to where Sophie was finishing up bandaging the last guard’s arm. Her hands were smudged with soot and a faint streak of blood, but her eyes were bright, fierce, and entirely unbowed.

“You saved their lives tonight,” Antonio said quietly, kneeling beside her on the dirty pavement.

“I did my job,” Sophie said, wiping her brow with the back of her forearm. “Just like you did yours.”

Before Antonio could answer, a sharp crack echoed through the smoky air.

Bang.

A stray bullet pinged off a steel shipping container two feet above their heads. From the shadows of a crumbling brick pier across the yard, a solitary figure—Vince Moretti himself—stepped out, holding a heavy revolver, his face twisted in desperate rage.

“Russo! It ends tonight! You take everything, I take—”

Before Moretti could finish his sentence, Antonio moved with terrifying speed. He didn't even flinch. He drew his own weapon with fluid, practiced precision and fired a single, clean shot that knocked Moretti’s gun spinning into the dirt, followed by a swift tackle from Antonio’s security detail that pinned Moretti to the ground.

Silence descended once more over the Red Hook yard.

Antonio slowly lowered his arm, holstered his weapon, and turned back to Sophie. His chest was heaving slightly, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that had nothing to do with violence and everything to do with survival.

He reached out, his strong fingers gently brushing a smudge of soot from her cheek.

“You shouldn't have been here,” he muttered, his voice thick with emotion.

“And you shouldn't have tried to fight a war alone,” Sophie whispered back, leaning slightly into his touch.

Antonio’s hand cupped her jaw, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. The cold, feared king of Brooklyn was completely disarmed.

“My world is dangerous, Sophie,” he murmured softly against the cool night air. “If you stay in my orbit, there will be no turning back.”

Sophie looked into his dark, searching eyes, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his pulse beneath her fingertips.

“Good,” she whispered with a brave, crooked smile. “Because I never liked running away anyway.”
