Chapter 6 - The Unwanted Invitation

For three days, Sophie walked around in a state of suspended disbelief. She called the Manhattan medical billing office twice, half-expecting it to be an elaborate practical joke, only to be told by a bewildered finance director that an anonymous benefactor had cleared the entire ledger with a wire transfer.

Her grandmother’s prescription refills were covered. The collection calls stopped. Her tuition arrears at NYU had vanished from the portal, replaced by a green checkmark reading PAID IN FULL - SPRING SEMESTER.

Yet, the relief was tangled with a knot of deep unease. Antonio Russo didn't do favors out of pure charity; everyone in Brooklyn knew that taking something from a man like Russo meant entering his orbit—and escaping his orbit was nearly impossible.

Her theory was proven correct on Friday evening, just as she finished her shift at Bellarosa.

This time, Marco didn't snap at her. In fact, the head waiter practically hovered around her locker with a terrified, obsequious grin, offering to help her pack her bag.

“No need to rush out, Sophie,” Marco said nervously, sweating again. “You... ah... you have a car waiting outside.”

Sophie stepped out onto the sidewalk of Atlantic Avenue. Parked right by the curb was a sleek, matte-black Mercedes Maybach. The rear door was held open by the scarred security guard from her apartment building.

“Mr. Russo requests your presence for dinner at his private estate in Bay Ridge,” the guard said smoothly, his tone leaving zero room for debate. “Please, get in.”

Sophie hesitated, looking up and down the busy Brooklyn street. Passersby were giving the luxury vehicle a wide berth. She knew she could refuse, but she also knew that ignoring a direct summons from Antonio Russo was a dangerous game.

“Fine,” she muttered, sliding into the plush leather interior of the car.

The ride was silent, smooth, and suffocatingly luxurious. Within twenty minutes, the car passed through massive wrought-iron gates topped with security cameras, rolling up a long, winding gravel drive toward a sprawling Mediterranean-style villa perched high on the cliffs overlooking the Narrows.

When she stepped out, she was met not by armed thugs, but by Maria herself, standing on the stone terrace wrapped in a cashmere shawl.

“Sophie! My dear!” Maria beamed, stepping forward to embrace her warmly. “I told Antonio he was being too formal sending cars, but my son is stubborn as a mule.”

Moments later, Antonio stepped through the French doors of the grand dining room. He had removed his suit jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing strong, corded forearms.

“Welcome to my home, Sophie,” Antonio said, his deep voice carrying a note of genuine warmth that surprised her. “I hope my men weren't too aggressive.”

“They were terrifying,” Sophie shot back, her defensive instincts flaring up instantly. “Just like your calling cards.”

Antonio’s lips twitched into a rare, faint smile. “Good. Honesty suits you.”
