Chapter 8 - Treason in the East Wing

Smoke and dust filled the air.
Raphael pulled two heavy pistols from his desk drawer, his face transforming back into the cold, terrifying warlord of Chicago.
"Stay under the desk!" he ordered, throwing a tactical vest over his black shirt. "Frankie and the guards will secure the inner corridor!"
"Raphael, no!" I cried out, grabbing his arm. "They knew the perimeter codes! The alarms were disabled from the inside!"
Raphael froze, his eyes widening in sudden, horrific realization.
Inside job.
Before he could react, the heavy double doors of the study were kicked open.
Victor Vane stepped into the smoke-filled room, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing the insignias of the Valenti crime family.
"You were right about one thing, Raphael," Victor sneered, raising an automatic rifle toward us. "You should have sent me to Gary, Indiana. Because letting me stay was the biggest mistake of your short life."
"Victor," Raphael said, his voice dropping into a deadly baritone as he stepped smoothly in front of me, shielding my entire body with his broad frame. "How much did Valenti pay you to sell out your own family?"
"Enough to buy half of Miami," Victor smirked. "And with you out of the way, the council will hand me the crown by morning. They're tired of a boss who spends his nights playing house with a maid instead of running the streets!"
Victor raised his rifle, aiming directly at Raphael’s chest.
"Say goodbye, boss."
My mind went completely blank with terror. I couldn't let him die. I couldn't let the only man who had ever truly protected me be slaughtered in front of my eyes.
Without thinking, I reached under the desk, grabbed a heavy brass statue of an eagle that sat on the low shelf, and threw it with all my strength straight at Victor's face.
CRACK!
The brass eagle struck Victor square across his temple.
"Argh!" Victor screamed, stumbling backward, his gun firing wildly into the ceiling.
"Move!" Raphael roared.
In a fraction of a second, Raphael raised both of his weapons and fired with terrifying, flawless precision. Four shots echoed through the room like thunderclaps.
The four Valenti mercenaries collapsed to the floor instantly.

Victor, bleeding heavily from his head, scrambled backward into the hallway, screaming for reinforcements.
Raphael grabbed my hand, yanking me up from the floor. "We have to reach the back stairs now!"
