Chapter 7 - The Bloodline War

The weeks turned into two months.
Day by day, night by night, the unspoken bond between Raphael and me grew deeper, stronger, and far more dangerous.
During the daytime, I managed his schedules, sat through high-stakes meetings with city officials, and decoded encrypted messages sent from the family's shipping ports. I proved to be quick, meticulous, and fiercely protective of his interests.
At night, when the house fell silent, the doors of the study remained locked.
We didn't spend those nights as boss and employee.
We sat on the leather sofa near the marble fireplace. Raphael would rest his heavy head in my lap, letting out long, weary sighs as I gently ran my fingers through his dark, wavy hair, massaging away the relentless stress that threatened to crush him.
He told me about his childhood—about being raised by a ruthless father who taught him that love was a vulnerability and mercy was a death sentence. He told me about the burden of taking over the empire at twenty-two after his father was assassinated by a rival family.
And I told him about Micah—about our parents dying in a highway crash when I was nineteen, about how I gave up my nursing scholarship to take three cleaning jobs just to keep a roof over my little brother's head.
"You gave up your life for him," Raphael said one evening, looking up at me from my lap, his gray eyes soft with admiration.
"I would give my life a thousand times for him," I replied softly.
Raphael reached up, his warm fingers gently tracing my lower lip. "I know the feeling, Clara. Because I would give my life a thousand times for you."
My heart hammered against my ribs. I leaned down, caught in the irresistible magnetic pull between us, and our lips met in a slow, deep, agonizingly tender kiss that tasted of quiet promises and hidden hope.
For twenty-seven nights, we lived in that bittersweet paradise.
Then, night eighty-two arrived.
A thunderstorm raged over Lake Forest, mirroring the dark night Raphael had first knocked on my door.
Suddenly, the security alarms across the estate shrieked into the night.

Explosions rocked the eastern gates. Automatic gunfire echoed across the courtyard, shattering the crystal glass windows of the grand foyer.
"Clara! Get down!" Raphael roared, tackling me to the hardwood floor of the study as a spray of bullets blew through the high stained-glass windows above us.
