Chapter 7 - The Coordinates of Grace

Twenty minutes later, inside the subterranean tactical room beneath the Moretti estate, the maps of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin were spread across the digital planning table.
Dr. Ramos had given me a mild sedative to stop the uterine contractions and forced me to sit in an ergonomic leather recliner with an IV drip stabilizing my hydration. I refused to go to sleep. I held Elena's gold angel-wing locket tightly in my right palm.
"Daniel left a cipher," Vincent said, leaning over the high-resolution scans of the documents we had recovered from the suitcase. "Elena’s last voice message said Daniel made sure Clara would find her. There has to be a key."
I looked down at the locket in my hand.
"The key isn't in the paperwork, Vincent," I said softly, my voice hoarse from the smoke that had drifted through the upper floors.
Vincent looked up from the table. "What do you mean?"
"Daniel gave me an identical locket on our first anniversary," I said, reaching into my collar to pull out the tarnished silver chain I had worn every single day since Daniel’s funeral. Suspended from the chain was a small silver key—no larger than the tip of my pinky finger.
"Daniel told me never to take this off," I whispered, tears blurring my vision. "He said, *'Clara, when the storm breaks, this key unlocks the only home that matters.'* I thought it was just romantic poetry. I thought it was a metaphor."
Vincent stepped toward me, his breath hitching. He took Elena’s gold angel locket from the desk and turned it over.
On the back of the golden wing, nestled between the carved feathers, was a microscopic keyhole.
Vincent looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief.
I unclasped the silver chain from around my neck and handed him the key.
With hands that were usually steady enough to shoot a target at a hundred yards, Vincent’s fingers trembled as he inserted the tiny silver key into the gold locket.
A faint *click* sounded.
The back of the locket popped open, revealing not a photograph, but a tightly rolled strip of microfilm no thicker than a thread.
Marco immediately took the film with tweezers and placed it under the digital microscope connected to the main screen.
The image resolved instantly.
A handwritten note in Daniel Vance’s unmistakable, blocky handwriting:
*Sister Mary Catherine — St. Michael's Convent & Lighthouse Sanctuary.*
*Kenosha, Wisconsin. Lake Michigan bluff.*
*Codename: Little Bird.*
*Grace is safe. If you are reading this, Clara is with Vincent. Forgive me, Boss. I had to keep her away until you knew who your real enemies were.*
Vincent stared at the screen. A deep, agonizing groan tore from his chest as he buried his face in his hands. The weight of four years of grief, four years of believing his wife had died despising him, finally broke through his iron armor.
"Daniel kept her safe," Vincent choked out, his shoulders shaking. "He kept my little girl safe."
I reached out and placed my hand over his trembling forearm. "Daniel loved you like an older brother, Vincent. He never stopped being your soldier. He just knew that to save your daughter, he had to make the ultimate sacrifice."
Vincent took a deep, steadying breath. When he looked up, the tears were gone, replaced by an incandescent, terrifying purpose.
"Richard is heading north toward Kenosha right now," Vincent said, turning to Marco. "His jet landed at Kenosha Regional Airport ten minutes ago. He knows Daniel’s safehouses were in that sector. He is going to scour every convent and orphanage along the coast."
"We have two Black Hawk helicopters at our private hangar in Gary," Marco replied instantly. "We can be over Kenosha in twenty-five minutes."
"Prep the gunships," Vincent ordered.
"I'm coming with you," I said firmly, struggling to get out of the recliner.
"Clara, no," Dr. Ramos protested immediately. "You are in no condition—"
"I am her aunt!" I snapped, my voice ringing with an authority that shocked even myself. "Daniel raised her for three years! Grace knows Daniel's voice, and she knows Daniel's stories! If you burst into that convent with ten armed men, you will terrify her! She needs to see Daniel's key! She needs to see me!"
Vincent looked at me. In that moment, he didn't see a helpless, pregnant maid dragging a suitcase down a staircase. He saw the sister of the woman he had loved, the mother of his future niece, and an unbreakable survivor of the Sterling bloodline.

"Get her a tactical vest and warm clothing," Vincent commanded Gabriel. "She flies with me."
