Chapter 6 - Wolves at the Gate

The mansion’s security alarms began to shriek, a blaring, red-strobed siren that instantly bathed the wood-paneled library in crimson light.

"Perimeter breach!" Marco’s radio crackled with panicked shouts. *"East gate is down! Black SUVs breaching the inner driveway! They’re wearing tactical gear—these aren't street thugs, they're Sterling’s private contractors!"*

"Vanessa had a backup beacon," Vincent snarled, instantly drawing a custom black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his jacket. He turned to Dr. Ramos. "Take Clara into the vault behind the wine cellar. There is a reinforced blast door. Lock it from the inside and do not open it for anyone except my voice."

"No! Vincent, you can't fight them alone!" I cried, trying to sit up, but the dull ache in my belly flared again.

"I am never alone in my own home," Vincent replied, his voice chillingly composed. He looked into my eyes, reaching out with one gloved hand to gently cup my cheek. "You survive, Clara. For Daniel. For your daughter. And for Grace. I will clear the path."

He turned and strode out into the corridor, racking the slide of his weapon with a sharp *clack*.

"Miss Vance, we must move now!" Dr. Ramos urged, quickly packing his medical supplies and helping me off the couch.

Supported by Dr. Ramos and one armed guard, I limped through the concealed servant passageways behind the library. The house shook as explosions rocked the outer courtyard. The sound of high-caliber rifles echoed through the marble hallways—a brutal, violent symphony of war.

As we reached the heavy iron gate leading down to the wine cellar, a shadow stepped out from the intersecting corridor.

It was Vanessa.

Her evening gown was torn, her blonde hair disheveled, and in her trembling right hand, she gripped a small silver revolver. Her eyes were bloodshot, wild with the frenzy of a cornered beast.

"You," Vanessa hissed, raising the revolver straight at my chest. "You worthless little charity case. You ruined everything! Four years! I spent four years waiting for Vincent to forget that sanctimonious bitch Elena! I was going to be the queen of this city!"

"Vanessa, put the gun down!" Dr. Ramos shouted, stepping half in front of me. "The estate is surrounded! Vincent's men will butcher you!"

"My father’s men are already inside!" Vanessa screamed, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Once you and that parasite in your belly are dead, the trust dissolves! Vincent will have no choice but to marry me to save his syndicates!"

"Daniel knew what you were," I said, my voice surprisingly steady, though my heart was pounding like a war drum against my ribs. "He knew you poisoned Elena's mind. You told Elena that Vincent was going to take her child away, didn't you? You drove her into hiding!"

Vanessa let out a psychotic laugh. "Elena was weak! She cried every night because she didn't have the stomach for this life! She begged my father to help her escape! But Daniel... Daniel figured out our game. He took Grace before we could use her as leverage against Vincent!"

"And you ran Daniel down in cold blood," I said, a bitter, cold hatred rising in my chest.

"I didn't," Vanessa sneered. "My father did. And now, I'm going to finish his work."

She leveled the gun at my forehead.

*BANG.*

The gunshot deafened the narrow stone corridor.

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the burning impact of lead. But no pain came.

I opened my eyes.

Vanessa was staring down at her own chest in disbelief. A dark, blossoming crimson circle spread across the silk of her designer gown. Her fingers went slack, the silver revolver clattering against the stone floor.

Behind her stood Vincent Moretti.

His trench coat was scorched at the collar, a smoking gun held firmly in his right hand. His eyes were devoid of mercy.

Vanessa collapsed onto her knees, choking on her own blood, before slumping face-down onto the cold concrete floor.

Vincent didn't look at her corpse for more than a second. He rushed forward, sliding his weapon into its holster, and caught me as my knees finally gave out.

"Are you hit?" he demanded, his hands frantically inspecting my shoulders, my sides, my belly. "Clara, look at me! Are you hurt?"

"I'm... I'm okay," I gasped, burying my face into his chest, clutching his coat as the adrenaline crashed through me. "You came back."

"Always," Vincent whispered fiercely, wrapping his arms around me. He looked up at Marco, who had just appeared behind him with blood on his tactical vest.

"The courtyard is secure, Boss," Marco reported, breathing heavily. "Richard Sterling wasn't with them. He directed the hit from his private jet at O'Hare. He's heading north."

Vincent’s jaw tightened into iron. "He knows where Grace is."
