Chapter 7 - The Emergency Room and the Screen

The emergency room of St. Jude Memorial Hospital smelled sharply of antiseptic, iodine, and bleach. The harsh, sterile fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a clinical glare over the private trauma bay where the medical staff worked in efficient silence.

After an hour of frantic examinations, neurological tests, and a CT scan that thankfully confirmed no skull fracture or internal bleeding, a young resident stitched up the deep laceration above my right temple. Seven neat black stitches pulled the torn skin together, accompanied by a dull, throbbing ache that radiated down my neck.

Sitting in a stiff plastic chair beside the hospital bed, Megan held a paper cup of lukewarm water to my lips. Her designer wedding dress had been discarded hours ago, replaced by a simple oversized hoodie borrowed from a sympathetic ER nurse.

"How does your head feel?" Megan asked softly, her eyes red-rimmed from crying.

"Like someone hit it with a hammer," I rasped, managing a weak, wry smile. "Which, to be fair, is entirely accurate."

Megan let out a wet, half-hearted laugh, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "I still can't believe it. All those years... I thought he was just a stern, demanding father. I had no idea he was systematically robbing Mom behind our backs."

"None of us did," I murmured. "Mom protected us better than we ever realized."

At that moment, the sliding glass door of the hospital room parted, and Mom walked in. She was holding two paper cups of terrible vending machine coffee, looking noticeably lighter, as if a crushing, thirty-year boulder had finally been lifted from her shoulders. She handed one cup to Megan and pulled up a chair beside my bed.

"The doctor says you're going to be fine," Mom said, her voice warm and steady. "Just a mild concussion and strict instructions to rest for a week."

"Did they catch him?" I asked, wincing slightly as I shifted my weight against the pillows.

Mom smiled grimly, set her coffee cup down on the rolling bedside table, and picked up the remote control for the wall-mounted television. She clicked the power button, flipping the screen from a silent medical documentary to the local late-night news broadcast.

The banner at the bottom of the screen read in bold red letters: BREAKING NEWS: PROMINENT LOCAL BUSINESSMAN ARRESTED IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD SCHEME.

There, captured by news cameras at the municipal marina, was Richard. He was pinned face-down against the hood of his luxury sedan by two heavily armed police officers, his silver hair messed by the wind, screaming furious obscenities directly into the camera lenses as the silver cuffs clicked shut around his wrists.

"They caught him right as he was stepping onto the charter boat," Mom explained calmly, taking a sip of her coffee. "Vanessa wasn't waiting for him, either. The fraud division picked her up two hours before the reception even started. She cut a full plea deal and handed over every encrypted password and bank routing number in exchange for federal witness protection and a reduced sentence."

We sat in silence for a long moment, watching the muted television screen as footage of Richard being led away in a police cruiser played on a loop.

Megan squeezed my hand. Her dream wedding had been undeniably destroyed, the celebration cut short in the most violent way imaginable. But as we watched the man who had deceived and terrorized our family finally face absolute accountability, we realized something far more valuable had been saved.
