Chapter 5 - The Silent Mastermind

I blinked sluggishly, fighting against the blackness pulling at my consciousness. Through a haze of pain, I watched Mom lift her phone to her ear. She didn't dial three numbers in a frantic panic. She pressed a speed-dial button, her movements practiced and precise.
"Detective Ramirez?" she said into the receiver, her voice unnervingly serene despite the pandemonium surrounding us. "Richard is on the move. He just assaulted our daughter and fled the venue. Yes, he’s heading straight for the marina. He thinks the boat is fully fueled and waiting."
My vision swam, but I felt Megan’s hands frantically pressing a cold, damp cloth against my bleeding temple.
"Stay with me, please stay with me," my sister sobbed, her voice breaking into ragged fragments as the delicate lace of her pristine white gown became rapidly stained with my warm blood.
Mom knelt beside us on the blood-spattered stage floor. Her trembling, which I had witnessed for years, was entirely gone. In its place stood an iron-clad resolve—a steely resilience I had never known she possessed. For three long years, I had thought I was the one protecting her. I had thought her passive silence was born of weakness, fear, and utter helplessness.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
"I'm so sorry you got hurt, sweetheart," Mom whispered, gently brushing my matted hair back from my forehead with a tender, steady hand. "But I had to let him believe he was outsmarting us. If I had confronted him before I had all the airtight, legally binding evidence of his offshore accounts and asset concealment, he would have vanished overseas with everything we owned, leaving us with nothing."
Sirens wailed in the distance, their sharp, multi-tone shrieks growing louder and closer by the second as police cruisers and emergency units converged on the hotel.
Mom looked up from me to Megan, her eyes shining with unshed tears of fierce maternal pride.
"Vanessa was never just a mistress," Mom explained quietly as the terrified wedding guests backed away slowly, giving us a wide perimeter of respectful silence. "She was his primary financial accomplice. They were planning to catch a private charter out of the country tonight, right after the reception concluded. That three hundred and fifty thousand dollars wasn't just spent on luxury cars and gifts—it was seed money for a new life in Belize."

Mom paused, offering a faint, grim smile.
"But I found out about the unauthorized wire transfers six months ago. I’ve been working undercover with the state fraud division and Detective Ramirez ever since, letting him dig his own grave."
