Chapter 6 - Sirens and Shadows

The heavy double doors of the reception hall banged open, admitting a rush of cold autumn air and flashing red-and-blue strobe lights that painted the elegant decor in harsh, clinical hues.

"Paramedics! Clear the way!" a gruff voice commanded.

Two emergency medical technicians burst through the crowd, carrying a folding aluminum stretcher and heavy trauma bags. They rushed up the stage steps, their boots clacking against the wood.

"Head trauma, possible concussion, laceration above the right temple," Megan babbled frantically, her hands still stained with my blood. "He hit her with an iron hammer!"

"We've got her, ma'am. Let us work," the lead paramedic said professionally, kneeling beside me.

They swiftly secured a cervical collar around my neck, checked my pupillary response with a penlight, and carefully transferred me onto the rigid surface of the stretcher. The world tilted as they lifted me up, the bright overhead lights blurring into streaks of gold and crimson.

Just as they began wheeling me toward the exit doors, Mom’s phone buzzed loudly in her hand.

She glanced down at the illuminated screen, read the brief text notification, and let out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. She looked up, caught my eyes as the stretcher passed her, and gave my hand a reassuring squeeze.

"They've intercepted him," she whispered softly.

Uniformed police officers streamed past the stretcher into the hotel lobby, securing the perimeter and taking initial witness statements from the trembling guests. Outside, the wailing sirens cut off abruptly, replaced by the crackle of police dispatch radios and shouted commands.

As the paramedics loaded my stretcher into the back of the waiting ambulance, the cold night air hit my face, sharp and sobering. Megan climbed in beside me, clutching my hand so tightly her knuckles were stark white. Mom rode in the front passenger seat of the ambulance, her phone pressed to her ear as she continued briefing Detective Ramirez on the ongoing asset seizure.

We left behind a ruined wedding reception—tables filled with untouched gourmet meals, a towering five-tier wedding cake melting under the heat of the spotlights, and a room full of guests whispering in shock. But as the ambulance doors slammed shut and we pulled away from the curb, I knew that the rot at the core of our family had finally been cut out for good.
