Chapter 5 - The Eviction Notice

On a crisp, freezing Monday morning, a team of court bailiffs, local police officers, and professional movers arrived at the penthouse.

Valerie stood by the secure windows of the building management office downstairs, watching the entire operation unfold on a high-definition monitor.

Upstairs, the authorities were executing the court-ordered eviction and asset-freeze decrees. Charles, still clad in his orange holding-facility jumpsuit, was escorted back under guard for exactly thirty minutes to collect his bare essentials. Patricia and Lauren, who had been illegally squatting in the guest suites, were served with immediate lockout notices and given precisely one hour to pack their designer luggage under police supervision before the locks were changed permanently.

Through the lobby security glass, Valerie watched as Patricia and Lauren dragged their oversized suitcases out onto the snowy sidewalk, frantically calling for cabs that took far too long to arrive. Their privileged, parasite-like existence had come crashing down in a matter of seconds.

Marcus stepped into the office, holding a fresh cup of coffee and handing a finalized audit report to Valerie.

“The asset freeze on all joint accounts is holding firm,” Marcus reported, smiling. “Our forensic accountants have already traced every illegal wire transfer back to their personal holdings. The court has granted emergency liens on Charles’s suburban home and Patricia’s vehicles. They won't see a single dime of your capital, Valerie.”

Valerie looked at the monitor, watching the movers cart away the last remnants of her in-laws' invasive presence. A deep, profound sense of peace began to settle over her shoulders. The glass cage they had built around her was finally shattered, and she was breathing fresh air for the first time in years.
