Chapter 2 - The Cold Reality of the ER

The private elevator doors slid open to the subterranean parking garage, but the heavy footsteps of her husband echoed loudly behind her. Brian hurried out of the stairwell, his face flushed, desperation flashing across his features as he realized she wasn't just throwing a tantrum—she was actually leaving.

“Valerie, wait—don’t call the police,” he pleaded, his voice cracking as fear finally took hold of his arrogant facade. “Let’s just talk about this inside. Dad had too much to drink, you know how he gets—”

Valerie didn’t even slow her pace. She unlocked her SUV, tossed her suitcase into the passenger seat, and slid behind the wheel. Through the rolled-down window, she looked at him with an expression of pure disdain.

“Stay away from me, Brian,” she said coldly, before locking the doors and peeling out of the garage.

She drove straight through the snowy Minneapolis streets to St. Mary’s Emergency Room. Within minutes of walking through the sliding glass doors, she was rushed past triage and surrounded by medical professionals who took her vitals, examined the second-degree burn on her abdomen, and hooked her up to fetal monitors.

The hours that followed were a blur of antiseptic wipes, sterile lights, and quiet reassurance. The burn was painful and would leave a scar, but miraculously, the baby’s heartbeat remained strong, steady, and resilient. Her little boy—or girl—was fighting right alongside her.

Around 1:00 AM, a tall, professional-looking police detective entered her curtained hospital bay. Valerie sat upright against the pillows, her face pale but her demeanor unshakeable. She gave a precise, unvarnished account of the assault, detailing Charles’s physical attack and Brian’s active participation in restraining her. When the detective asked if there was proof, Valerie unlocked her phone and handed it over, showing him the crisp, high-resolution photographs of her injury, the burnt sweater, and Brian’s guilty face.

Furthermore, she informed him of the penthouse’s enterprise-grade security system, which continuously recorded audio and video in the common areas, including the dining room.

“The building management holds the master server keys,” Valerie told the detective calmly. “Every second of what happened tonight is stored securely in the cloud.”

As the detective nodded, noting down case numbers and building contacts, Valerie’s phone buzzed on the hospital tray table. She glanced down. It was a text message from Marcus Vance, her corporate attorney and long-time legal counsel:

“Valerie, do not contact Brian. Stay safe.”

A second message flashed immediately after:

“I found something else.”

Valerie stared at the glowing screen, her heart skipping a beat against her ribs.

Then a third message arrived:

“Something connected to your money.”

May you like

She read the words twice, the sterile smell of the hospital room fading into the background. The sudden, desperate terror she had seen in Brian’s eyes back in the penthouse parking garage suddenly clicked into place. The physical assault at the dinner table hadn't been an isolated incident fueled purely by holiday alcohol; it was the frantic, violent culmination of a much deeper, much darker betrayal.

Whatever her husband and his family had been hiding from her behind her back... Marcus had just uncovered it.
