Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Ghost Ledger

By midnight, the penthouse had transformed into an impromptu war room. The walnut dining table was buried under corporate tax returns, bank statements, and Laura's husband’s archived research files.
Robert watched in awe as Laura worked. The nervous, exhausted housekeeper was gone; in her place was a lethal, hyper-focused forensic investigator. Her fingers flew across her laptop keyboard while she cross-referenced wire transfers with public municipal filings.
"Look here," Laura said, pointing a slender finger at a row of numbers on the screen. "Your CFO, Marcus Vance, didn't just disappear. He initiated a bulk transfer of four point two million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands forty-eight hours before the federal subpoenas were issued."
"Marcus?" Robert muttered, rubbing his temples. "I put him through college. I made him partner."
"Greed doesn't care about loyalty, Mr. Caldwell. Look at the routing numbers. They trace back to a subsidiary registered under a residential address in Evanston."
"That's my ex-wife's vacation property," Robert realized, the pieces snapping together with sickening clarity. "Or rather, the property she demanded and received in our settlement. She and Marcus must have been working together for years, siphoning funds right under my nose."

Laura paused, looking at him with genuine empathy. "Betrayal from people you trusted hurts deeper than any financial loss. But right now, we don't have time for grief. We need proof that can withstand a federal audit before the freeze hits your primary operational accounts tomorrow morning at nine."
As the clock ticked past 3:00 AM, the tension in the room shifted. The professional boundaries dissolved into a gritty, shared determination. When Laura’s shoulders slumped from fatigue, Robert silently walked to the kitchen and brewed a fresh cup of coffee, setting it beside her without a word. She looked up, offering a tired, appreciative smile that felt warmer than any luxury he had ever bought.
