Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

The revelation hung in the air like a physical weight. Robert stared at the dossier, its edges frayed from years of being thumbed through, legal notes scrawled in meticulous handwriting.

"The official report called it a tragic hit-and-run," Laura whispered, her voice stripped of all emotion, revealing raw, unhealed trauma beneath. "A drunk driver on Lake Shore Drive. No witnesses. The investigation was closed in forty-eight hours."

"And you think it was connected to his work?" Robert asked, leaning forward, forgetting his own corporate crisis entirely.

"I know it was," Laura corrected, sliding the top document closer to him. "David was auditing a massive shell-company network funneled through commercial real estate development in the Midwest. The primary beneficiary of those shell companies was an entity called Apex Holdings."

Robert’s breath caught. The name sounded chillingly familiar. "Apex Holdings... my CFO proposed a joint venture with them six months ago. I signed off on it because my partner vouched for them."

Laura’s eyes narrowed. "Your partner didn't just vouch for them; he likely engineered them. The patterns in these ledgers match the unauthorized transfers draining Caldwell Urban Development right now. Whoever is framing you, Mr. Caldwell, is using the exact same playbook that silenced my husband."

For the first time in a decade, Robert felt entirely stripped of his armor. He looked at Laura—not as a nameless face in a housekeeping uniform, but as a brilliant, grieving investigator who shared a common enemy.

"If what you're saying is true," Robert said slowly, "they aren't just trying to bankrupt my company. They're trying to bury anyone who looks too closely at the foundation."

"Then we have a choice," Laura replied, standing up and buttoning her cuffs. "We can sit here and wait for the federal indictment to destroy you, or we can open the books."
