Chapter 10 - The Horizon Clears

Six months later, the Chicago skyline was bathed in the golden warmth of a summer sunset. Caldwell Urban Development had undergone a complete restructuring, with Laura Hayes officially stepping in as Chief Compliance Officer and co-director of internal auditing, ensuring absolute integrity across every project the company touched.

On the terrace of the Lake Geneva estate—the very house Robert’s ex-wife had once stripped away in the bitter divorce settlement, which Robert had legally repurchased and restored—the atmosphere was peaceful and full of life.

Robert stood by the railing in a tailored linen shirt, watching as Laura walked across the green lawn, laughing as the summer breeze caught her hair. She no longer wore the gray housekeeping uniform or carried the heavy burden of unavenged grief; she walked with the light, confident stride of a woman who had reclaimed her destiny and found her true home.

As she reached the terrace, Robert stepped forward, wrapping his arms securely around her waist and pulling her close against his chest.

"Penny for your thoughts, Chief Compliance Officer," Robert whispered against her hair, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple.

Laura leaned back, looking up into his eyes with a serene, radiant expression, resting her hands over his heart.

"I was just thinking," she smiled softly, "that some foundations are built to last forever."

Robert smiled, tightening his embrace as they watched the sun dip below the Chicago horizon, stepping together into a bright, unshakable future.
