Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Perimeter

"Where is it?" Damon demanded.
"In my bag," Alina stammered, pointing toward the battered leather duffel Dante had placed in the corner of the wardrobe. "It’s just a cheap, wooden thing. It plays a Brahms lullaby. Marco bought it at a flea market on Hanover Street two weeks before..."
Before she could finish, Damon had crossed the room. He unzipped the duffel, his large hands surprisingly deft as he bypassed the worn clothes until his fingers touched polished mahogany.
He pulled the music box out.
It was a small, octagonal box inlaid with faded mother-of-pearl flowers. Damon brought it under the lamplight. He examined the hinges, the winding key on the bottom, the subtle seams along the wooden base.
"Marco spent six months in federal prison in his twenties for electronic fraud before he ever picked up a gun for my father," Damon muttered, pulling a slim, razor-sharp pocketknife from his pocket. "He was a mechanic before he was a soldier. He loved hidden compartments."
With surgical precision, Damon slid the tip of the blade into the microscopic seam between the velvet lining and the wooden rim. A faint *click* echoed in the room.
The bottom panel dropped down by half an inch.
Alina gasped, stepping forward.
Inside the hollowed-out cavity of the wood lay a tiny, military-grade micro-SD card and a handwritten note on a folded piece of yellow legal pad paper.
Damon unfolded the paper. The handwriting was rough, slanted, unmistakably Marco’s.
*Damon,* the note read.
*If you’re reading this, I didn't make it to the marina. Silvano is selling the port to the Torneros. He’s taking a twenty percent cut on every shipping container of dirty narcotics moving through Terminal B. The files on this drive are the signed customs manifests, the bank routing numbers in the Cayman Islands, and the audio recording of Silvano meeting with Donato Tornero at the warehouse on Pier 42.*
*He knows I have it. If you find Alina, tell her I love her more than my own breath. Keep my girls safe, brother. Burn the rest to the ground.*
Damon’s hands trembled slightly as he read the words. A terrifying, silent fury settled over his features, transforming him from a man into a weapon of absolute retribution.
Suddenly, the red emergency light on the wall intercom began to pulse rhythmically.
Damon moved instantly, pressing the talk button. "Report."
Dante’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight, urgent, and backed by the sound of muffled engine noise. "Boss. We have an unauthorized convoy approaching the south gate. Three black SUVs. They cut the fiber-optic lines to the perimeter sensors twenty seconds ago. They aren't trying to talk."
"Who is it?" Damon asked, his voice chillingly calm.
"Silvano’s personal guard," Dante replied. "And boss... they have heavy hardware. They know she’s in the house. Felix must have flagged her identity the moment you brought her out of the housekeeping wing."
Damon didn't hesitate. "Lockdown protocol Alpha. Cut the main estate lights. Activate the auxiliary generators for the security grid. Tell the boys at the gate to fire at will."
"Understood."
Damon released the button. He turned to Alina.
She was already at the bed, scooping Mia into her arms. Mia stirred, whimpering softly, rubbing her eyes against the sudden tension in the room. "Mommy? Is it morning?"
"Shh, baby. It’s okay. Mommy’s here," Alina whispered, terror threatening to paralyze her.
Damon stepped between them and the door. He reached into the nightstand, pulling out a matte-black Sig Sauer 9mm handgun. He racked the slide with a clean, metallic *clack*.

"They aren't taking you," Damon said, looking directly into Alina’s eyes. "Not while I draw breath. Follow me."
