Chapter 10 - Sunshine on Stone

Six months later.

The coastal air carried the sharp, sweet scent of lilacs and salt spray.

The estate looked different now. The dark, brooding mahogany of the lower corridors had been replaced with bright, sunlit glass. The heavy velvet curtains were gone, replaced by sheer white linen that danced in the spring breeze blowing in from the sea.

On the expansive back terrace, a long wooden table was set for lunch. Fresh bread, bowls of pasta, and bottles of vintage wine from the cellar covered the surface.

Damon Moretti sat at the head of the table.

He was not wearing a three-piece suit. He wore a crisp white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the faint scars of the recent battle alongside the older, faded burns of Pier 42. He held a cup of espresso in one hand, looking over a legal document—not a shipping manifest, but the charter for the newly established *Marco Vandetti Memorial Foundation*, an organization dedicated to funding youth centers and legal aid across the city's poorest neighborhoods.

The Tornero syndicate was gone. Silvano’s network had been systematically dismantled, handed over to federal prosecutors through the evidence on Marco’s micro-SD card. The remaining families in the city had knelt, not out of fear of Damon’s cruelty, but out of respect for his absolute, unshakeable loyalty.

A high-pitched giggle echoed across the lawn.

"Uncle Dante! You can't catch me! My shoes are too fast!"

Mia, wearing a brand-new pair of pink light-up sneakers and a floral sundress, was tearing across the manicured grass, holding a small wooden airplane above her head.

Behind her, Dante Russo—the terrifying, granite-jawed head of syndicate security—was lumbering across the lawn in mock pursuit, growling like a clumsy bear and deliberately tripping over his own feet to let her escape.

"She’s too fast, boss!" Dante called out, wiping sweat from his forehead with a grin. "The aerodynamics are impossible!"

Damon chuckled, a warm, resonant sound that carried no trace of the cold monster who had once haunted these halls.

A gentle hand came to rest on his uninjured shoulder.

Alina leaned down, kissing his cheek. She wore a simple yellow summer dress, her brown hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, completely free of the severe bun and the starched apron of her past. Her face was radiant, her amber eyes clear and bright, devoid of the paralyzing fear that had shadowed her for years.

"You're working on a Sunday," she chided softly, sliding into the chair beside him.

"I'm reviewing the final signatures for the scholarship fund," Damon replied, reaching over to capture her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers naturally, possessively, yet infinitely tender. "The first twenty students start in September."

Alina looked out at Mia, who had successfully tackled Dante’s knee, squealing with triumphant laughter.

"Marco would be proud," Alina whispered, her thumb stroking the back of Damon’s hand. "He would be so proud of what you've done. Of what you've built for her."

Damon turned his head to look at her. The darkness that had once defined him had not disappeared—a man who lived in the underworld could never completely wash away the ink of his past—but it had found its anchor.

"Marco saved my life twice," Damon said softly. "Once in the fire. And once when he sent you and Mia into my house to ask me why you were afraid."

"I'm not afraid anymore," Alina said, looking directly into his eyes, her voice ringing with absolute certainty.

Damon brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with deep, reverent affection. "You never will be again. I swear it on his memory. And on my life."

Across the lawn, Mia broke away from Dante and came running up the stone steps of the terrace, her little feet pitter-pattering with furious speed. She threw herself straight into Damon’s lap, wrapping her small arms around his neck, smelling of sunshine, grass, and pure, unfettered joy.

"Damon!" Mia announced, poking the bridge of his nose with a grass-stained finger. "Can we go to the harbor and see the big ships today? Uncle Dante said you have a boat with an eagle on it!"

Damon smiled, wrapping his strong arms securely around the little girl who carried the blood of his brother and the heart of his future.

May you like

"Whatever you want, Mia," Damon murmured, kissing the top of her dark curls as Alina leaned her head against his shoulder. "The whole harbor is yours."

And as the afternoon sun bathed the stone terrace in warm, golden light, the shadows of the past finally receded, leaving behind only the laughter of a child who would never have to be invisible again.
