Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

December arrived with a blanket of clean, white snow over the rolling hills of Connecticut.

Daniel’s federal trial concluded not with a bang, but with a whimper. Faced with over forty counts of federal wire fraud, attempted murder-for-hire, money laundering, and grand larceny, and knowing that Chloe Bennett and his former corporate partners were prepared to testify against him, Daniel accepted a plea bargain.

He pleaded guilty to all counts.

The sentencing hearing was brief. The federal judge, a stern former prosecutor, did not mince words.

"Daniel Montgomery, your actions represent the absolute nadir of human cowardice," the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent federal courtroom. "You attempted to discard your wife and your child like refuse for financial convenience. You orchestrated schemes that devastated lives and stole millions from innocent people. You deserve no leniency from this court."

The sentence was handed down:

*Thirty-two years in federal prison at ADX Florence, without the possibility of parole, followed by twenty million dollars in mandatory restitution.*

Daniel didn't weep this time. He was completely hollowed out, a ghost of a man. As they turned him around to lead him away, our eyes met for the final time.

I didn't glare at him. I didn't smile.

I simply reached into my purse, pulled out a crisp two-hundred-dollar bill, and held it up between two fingers so he could see it clearly.

Daniel’s knees buckled. A strangled sound escaped his throat as the marshals dragged his limp body through the heavy iron doors, locking him away from the world for the rest of his youth.

The door clicked shut.
