Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heir

One year later.

The summer sun reflected brilliantly off the surface of the Long Island Sound. The sweeping lawns of my grandfather’s three-million-dollar estate were lush, green, and vibrant, filled with the laughter of children and the gentle sounds of a string quartet playing under the pavilion.

Today was Evelyn’s first birthday.

Over a hundred guests filled the gardens—true friends, community leaders, and the women from the *Claire & Evelyn Foundation*, the nonprofit organization I had established using the liquidated proceeds of the Montgomery estate to provide free legal defense and emergency housing for mothers escaping financial abuse.

Chloe Bennett was there, laughing near the dessert table. She had rebuilt her life, enrolled in law school, and was now working as a junior advocate at Victoria Sterling’s firm.

I stood on the stone terrace overlooking the water, cradling Evelyn in my arms. She had my dark hair and my grandfather’s piercing, intelligent eyes. She giggled, reaching her tiny hands up to touch the pearls around my neck.

Victoria walked up behind me, handing me a glass of chilled champagne.

"A penny for your thoughts, Claire," Victoria said, leaning against the balustrade.

"I was just thinking about the day I came home from the hospital," I replied softly, taking a sip of the crisp wine. "How they stood in this very house, convinced they had reduced me to nothing. They thought because I had just given birth, I was weak."

Victoria smiled, clinking her glass against mine. "They forgot that a mother protecting her child isn't just strong. She’s lethal."

A warm breeze blew off the water, rustling the linen curtains of the French doors behind us.

Inside the house, the deed was framed above the fireplace in the great hall. It was made out to *The Evelyn Montgomery Irrevocable Sovereign Trust*, completely protected, entirely untouchable, and sovereign forever.

I looked down at my daughter, kissing her soft forehead.

"This is your house, my love," I whispered to her as the music floated across the summer lawn. "And no one will ever take it from you again."
