Chapter 27 - The Sovereign Sweep

"Kill the connection!" Vance roared, lunging forward, completely abandoning his aristocratic composure.
The two security operatives surged forward, but Evelyn didn't flinch. She slammed the heavy steel faceplate of Safe 714 shut, trapping the titanium key inside the locked deposit box.
"The override doesn't erase the drive, Vance," Evelyn said, stepping back toward the corner of the vault, her chin held high. "It broadcasts the master hash keys directly to FINMA's automated algorithmic clearinghouse. Every financial authority in Zurich, Frankfurt, London, and New York just received the unencrypted sub-ledgers of the Janus Trust."
Vance froze, his hand trembling as he gripped the edge of the steel safe. "You're lying. You wouldn't burn the escrow. Your father's name is on those vouchers!"
"My father's name is on the vouchers because you forced him to sign them," Evelyn said with razor-sharp precision. "And along with the ledger, I uploaded my father's sworn affidavit, authenticated by the Zurich notary public forty minutes before you walked through those brass doors."
A low, mechanical hum began to vibrate through the walls of the subterranean vault.
It was the building’s automated lockdown sequence.
On Vance’s wrist, his encrypted smartwatch flashed red. Message after message began flooding the screen:
*ASSET FREEZE INITIATED — FINMA / SWISS FEDERAL PROSECUTOR.*
*CORRESPONDENT ACCOUNTS SUSPENDED — DEUTSCHE BANK NY.*
*INTERPOL BLUE NOTICE ISSUED — MONTGOMERY VANCE.*
Vance looked at his watch, his breathing turning ragged, shallow, like that of a drowning man.
"You fool," he choked out, his voice cracking with venom. "You destroyed forty years of work. Forty years! The Sterlings... the syndicate... it was the greatest financial apparatus ever constructed!"
"It was a criminal enterprise built on the blood of people who worked sixty hours a week while you and Arthur played god," Evelyn spat, her eyes burning into his. "You spent half a century trying to prove you were better than the Sterlings, Vance. But in the end, you were just another thief in an expensive sweater."
The heavy steel door of the vault chamber swung wide open.
Six officers of the *Kantonspolizei Zürich*, flanked by federal investigators wearing dark blue jackets marked *Bundeskriminalpolizei*, poured into the room, their weapons drawn and leveled at Vance and his two bodyguards.
"Hände hoch! Nicht bewegen!" the lead Swiss officer bellowed, his voice echoing thunderously in the confined space.
The two private security guards immediately dropped their hands, stepping away from their coats, knowing that any resistance against Swiss federal authorities in an underground vault was suicide.
Vance stood frozen. He looked at Evelyn. His face aged ten years in ten seconds. The cold, brilliant mentor had vanished; in his place stood an empty, bitter old man whose entire life had been consumed by a venomous obsession that had finally consumed him.
"I made you, Evelyn," Vance whispered, his voice trembling with pathetic, impotent fury as two officers grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back, clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists. "You would be nothing without me!"
Evelyn watched him without a shred of pity.

"You taught me how to find the missing numbers, Vance," she said quietly as the police marched him toward the elevator. "You just forgot that sooner or later, the audit comes for everyone."
