Chapter 18 - The Counter-Strike

Before the guards could raise their weapons, the corridor erupted in chaos.
Vance didn't draw his gun—he threw an industrial magnesium flare straight down the polished marble floor. The blinding white light exploded with the force of a miniature sun, filling the subterranean chamber with a searing glare and choking white smoke.
The guards shouted, firing blindly into the blinding haze, the crack of their weapons deafening in the stone vault.
"Sarah! Now!" Evelyn shouted into her collar.
Upstairs, plugged directly into the building's master telecommunications trunk, Sarah executed the script they had prepared three hours earlier.
Every terminal in the building—and every Bloomberg terminal connected to the New York Financial Clearinghouse—simultaneously received an unredacted copy of the master ledger, decrypted using the private keys Evelyn had extracted from the Secaucus tapes.
The screens in the vault’s monitoring station lit up with hundreds of cascading alerts:
`DOJ / SEC SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT: ASSET FREEZE EXECUTED.`
`INTERPOL RED NOTICE: ARTHUR STERLING (ACTIVE).`
`TOTAL ASSETS DETAINED: $4,892,104,000.`
Through the blinding smoke, Evelyn didn't run away. She ran forward.
She lunged toward the open vault door where Arthur was desperately trying to heave a steel lockbox out of the safety deposit recess. She slammed her body weight against the heavy steel gate, pinning his arm against the brass frame.
Arthur cried out in agony, his fingers slipping from the handle of the box.
"You said my father took fifty thousand dollars to save his wife," Evelyn hissed through the smoke, her face inches from his, her eyes blazing with an unyielding, terrifying clarity. "Look at me, Arthur! Look at his daughter!"
Arthur looked up, his face twisted in pain and terror as the smoke swirled around them.
"My father died with nothing because he spent the last ten years of his life paying that money back into an anonymous escrow account at the Manhattan municipal clerk's office," Evelyn said, tears of rage finally cutting through the soot on her cheeks. "I found the bank drafts in his old toolbox last night! He knew what you did to him! And he worked overtime every weekend of his life to cleanse every single penny you gave him!"
Heavy boots thundered down the marble stairs.
"Federal Agents! Drop your weapons! Drop them now!"
A dozen tactical marshals poured through the smoke, their laser sights painting the walls, the floor, and Arthur Sterling’s chest with lethal red dots.
Arthur’s security men immediately dropped their weapons to the floor, hands raised over their heads.
Arthur sank to his knees, his arm still trapped in the vault gate, his cold eyes finally flickering with the realization of total, irrevocable defeat.
Evelyn pulled the steel gate back, letting him collapse onto the marble. She reached down and picked up the steel lockbox—the master ledger of the Crestmont Syndicate.
She handed it directly to the lead federal marshal without looking back.

"Account closed," she whispered.
