Chapter 8 - The Birthday Gala

Saturday evening arrived with the breathless, dazzling speed of a coastal hurricane.
The Moretti estate had been transformed into an open-air wonderland of white tents, cascading fairy lights, and hundreds of guests dressed in black-tie attire. Jazz music drifted across the lawn, and champagne flutes sparkled under the amber glow of the setting sun.
I stood beside Adrian in a breathtaking floor-length ruby-red silk gown that hugged my frame like a second skin—another piece selected from his mysterious wardrobe budget.
Elena Moretti looked radiant as she stood at the center of the reception terrace, accepting birthday wishes from senators, corporate titans, and old family friends. But when she saw Adrian and me walking across the lawn toward her, her face lit up with an expression of pure, unadulterated joy.
"My dear boy," Elena declared, opening her arms to embrace her son before turning to pull me into a warm, fragrant hug. "Emily, you look like an absolute vision. This boy doesn't deserve you."
"I remind myself of that every single day, Elena," I smiled genuinely, feeling a sudden rush of warmth that had nothing to do with acting.
As the evening progressed, the party moved toward the central terrace for speeches and champagne toasts.
Marcus Moretti stood up with a glass in hand, tapping a silver spoon against his flute to command the attention of the three hundred guests gathered under the white tents.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus began, his voice carrying a smooth, theatrical cadence as he looked across the crowd. "As most of you know, my cousin Adrian has spent his entire adult life wedded exclusively to Moretti Logistics. For years, we all wondered if anyone would ever pierce the armor of our favorite corporate warlord."
A wave of polite laughter rippled through the crowd. Adrian stood beside me, his jaw tight, his arm wrapped securely around my waist.
"And yet," Marcus continued, raising his glass higher, his eyes shifting directly onto me with a sharp, calculating gleam. "In just one week, a woman named Emily Evans has managed what no one else could. She has completely upended his world. So tonight, on my aunt’s seventieth birthday, let us toast to the woman who finally captured the uncapturable Adrian Moretti... and let’s hope she’s ready for the ride."
Glasses clinked across the lawn. People smiled, applauded, and turned back to their conversations.
But as the applause died down, Adrian didn't raise his glass. Instead, he gently took the flute from my hand, set it down on a passing waiter’s tray, and turned to face me completely under the amber glow of the fairy lights.
The entire terrace around us seemed to blur into background noise.
"Adrian?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What are you doing?"
Adrian reached into his pocket—not for a speech, not for a corporate document, but for a small, velvet-covered box.
My breath caught in my throat. Every sound on the lawn died away.
"When I asked you to play my girlfriend for fifty thousand dollars," Adrian said, his deep, resonant voice carrying absolute, unwavering conviction, "I told myself it was a tactical maneuver. A temporary fix for a family obligation."
He dropped smoothly onto one knee right there on the grass in front of three hundred elite guests, opening the velvet box to reveal a blinding, flawless diamond ring that caught the amber light like liquid fire.
"I lied," Adrian whispered, his green eyes burning into mine with raw, undeniable devotion. "From the first day you walked into my office two years ago, I was already falling for you. I was just too arrogant and too terrified to admit it."

Gasps rippled through the guests standing nearby. Elena pressed her hands to her mouth, tears sparkling in her eyes. Marcus stared in stunned, utter disbelief.
"Emily," Adrian said, his voice steady and clear, cutting through the silence of the night. "I don't want a contract for a week. I don't want an assistant, and I don't want a pretend girlfriend. I want the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"
