Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Dinner Table

The Friday night family dinner was designed to be an intimate gathering of the inner circle—Elena, Adrian, his younger brother Christian, and their cousin Marcus, who handled legal operations for Moretti Logistics.
We were seated in the formal dining room beneath a massive crystal chandelier. The table groaned under the weight of silver platters, roasted meats, and fine wines.
For the first thirty minutes, the conversation flowed easily, dominated by Elena’s delighted questions about how Adrian and I managed to cross paths. I recited our scripted "coffee spill" story with practiced precision, while Adrian chimed in with fabricated details that made Elena laugh out loud.
I was beginning to think we might actually pull this off without a hitch.
Then Marcus Moretti leaned back in his chair, swirling his red wine, his sharp hazel eyes narrowing as he looked across the table at me. Marcus had always been the corporate shark of the family—calculating, cynical, and deeply suspicious of anyone who got too close to Adrian’s inner circle.
"It’s fascinating," Marcus said smoothly, his voice cutting through the pleasant chatter like a scalpel. "In two years of working as Adrian’s executive assistant, Emily, you never once mentioned a romantic connection to him. In fact, office policy at Moretti Logistics strictly discourages fraternization between executives and staff."
The table went instantly quiet.
My fork froze halfway to my mouth. A cold prickle of sweat broke out along my spine.
Adrian’s jaw tightened instantly. The easy, relaxed posture vanished, replaced by the lethal stillness of a predator ready to strike. Before he could open his mouth to shut his cousin down, I knew I had to handle it. If Adrian stepped in with aggression, Marcus would smell blood in the water.
I set my fork down, met Marcus’s cynical gaze head-on, and let out a soft, dismissive laugh.
"Corporate policy exists to protect productivity, Marcus," I said, my voice steady, clear, and dripping with composed confidence. "And when you work fourteen-hour days managing Adrian’s schedule, the last thing on your mind is mixing business with pleasure. It took him six months just to work up the courage to ask me out for a drink without a spreadsheet attached."
A ripple of surprised laughter broke out around the table.
Elena beamed, pointing her dessert spoon at Adrian. "Ha! I knew it! The great Adrian Moretti, terrified to ask a girl out!"

Even Marcus blinked, momentarily thrown off by my counter-attack before a tight, grudging smile touched his lips. "Well played, Emily."
Underneath the table, out of sight of Elena and Marcus, Adrian’s hand found mine. His long, warm fingers slid between mine, gripping my hand with a fierce, reassuring pressure that sent a jolt of pure electricity straight up my arm. He didn't let go for the rest of the evening.
